So, the WWM thread got me thinking...
what do you remember from your childhood that is gone?
I remember when Modells was more like a Woolworths. I got my guinea pig there.
I remember when the Target in Commack was a flea market and a skating rink AND had a drive in movie theatre.
I remember the McCrory's fire.
I remember when the TJMaxx in Kings Park was a Ben Franklin. I bought so much embroidery thread there for my friendship bracelets.

Re: So, the WWM thread got me thinking...
I remember the old Roosevelt Field. It had Le Petite Mall that had a store that had Hello Kitty stuff. And it had "the cave" hair salon, and some restaurant I can't remember the name of. They also had an awesome cookie place. Woolworths. Alexanders. And it was so dark.
I remember TSS. But it may have been in Hempstead (?). I know we didn't go all the way to Melville.

Re: So, the WWM thread got me thinking...
The KMart in Levittown used to be a TSS and that's where I worked when I was 16. I had to get a leisure pass from Eisenhower park in order to have photo ID to get hired.
I remember when the corner of Wantagh Avenue and Hempstead Turnpike was an empty lot called the Cornfields. Even though there was no corn.
We would walk from the high school through the trails there for lunch at McDonalds. We got all excited when this new store called Blockbuster Video moved in next door.
I still use my first Blockbuster video card that I got there when I was 18 and had no credit card. Until a month ago, they had no credit card on file for me, my old name, and the address of the house I grew up in that I haven't lived at it in 12 years.
eta:
McDonald's and Blockbuster are still there, I was just reminiscing. Us old people do that from time to time.

Re: So, the WWM thread got me thinking...
My mom took us to the Automat, now gone. It was fascinating.
Loved Woolworth's -- the photo booth, sewing section, getting sundaes at the counter and popping a balloon to find how much discount you got!
We used to play in the streets more than kids are able to for safety, now.

Re: So, the WWM thread got me thinking...
*I remember when we'd ride the blue bus to the mall to get to McCrory's for large bottles of Aqua Net.(Sad, but true.) *I remember when there were just "fields" where I grew up (Boyle Rd. and Middle Country) and we'd ride our bikes through the area to get to Friendly's, and now it is huge shopping centers. *I remember when we'd get our Christmas tree every year at the location across from the mall where, oh yeah, there is ANOTHER shopping center.
ETA: Speaking of A and S, was there a restaurant upstairs? I swear I remember eating there when I was younger, but nobody else remembers....

How about Nunleys? Omg, I loved that place!! I used to ride the carousel and grab the gold rings as I went around. I also loved the little car that you sat in and peddled with your hands.
Ah memories...
How about Gardners Village in West Hempstead? They used to have real reindeer there for Christmas.

I had my first roller date there.
My sister and I told our mom once that we were going to the Meadowbrook movie theatre to see Terms of Endearment but snuck over to the rink instead.
Now who is dating themselves?

OMG i totally remember that! and i remember TSS in hempstead also, it was on franklin ave.
i also remember when the BJ's and the Rallye bmw dealership in westbury on brushhollow rd was a drive in! loved it there!
i still remember what old country rd in westbury looked like before they put up Fortunoffs and costco and the source, etc. it was just the raceway and the raceway would be an outdoor flea market in the warm months and in the cold months they'd move it into the old building in the back. good times!
ooh and i also remember the old Shoppers Village in west hempstead on hempstead tpke, its now a national liquidators.

me too. my weekends in middle school were either at the flea market or the Sears Mall! I used to love Modell's. That store was awesome. I can remember when Commack had a lot of empty space. Now every square inch is covered in stores. Its kind of sad, actually.

not a place but an object...remember the best friend charms that you would split the charm in half and each would wear one side. Then when you decided to get in a fight you got it back and gave it to someone else...haha
