So Upset -- OHSS - Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome

Went for my 4th sono this morning since starting stims. The doctor was very excited about the number of follicles he saw (I think there were at least 14 on one side), but then said that I'm a prime candidate for developing OHSS and that I might have to freeze all my embryos and do FETs. I actually started crying in the office (darn hormone injections).

I am so disappointed. Apparently the success rate (depending on embryo quality of course) for a healthy baby during a fresh IVF is about 50% and for FETs it's about 35-40%.

I know that it's not the worst thing we could be dealing with, in some ways maybe it's a good thing (?) since this might mean we get a lot of good embryos, but I guess I let myself get carried away and started counting 9 months ahead...

Has anyone else dealt with this??

UPDATE

Just got my medication update. Tonight I will only take 1 Menopur, no Follistim - I guess this is 'coasting'?

My E2 yesterday was about 1,000 and today it was 1,800.

I am crossing my fingers that this cycle isn't a total bust

Dont you worry about the success rate... there are so many girls on here who got preggo with their FET cycle and not a fresh!!!

OHSS can be very dangerous so your doctor did the right thing! Sounds like you have a good number of embies coming your way!!!

I was at a risk of OHSS ( they retrieved 26 eggs)...They had me monitor my fluid outake and weight and I never developed it so my fresh transfer still happened....That resulted in my ! So it's not a definate that you will have to freeze all...And the good part is that you will have lots of embies to choose from and if your RE does it, may take them to blast...

The only thing that did get altered was the # of embryos that they put back...Our original plan was to put back 2, and after seeing what great quality my embryos were ( day 5) , the RE strongly advised me to put back only one because she said "if" both embryo's were to take, the OHSS would be far worse ( it gets worse with the more HCG that is released into your system or something like that) and it would have been dangerous to both myself and the pregnancy....

I was devestated thinking that I was cutting my odds in half and was told that putting back only 1 as opposed to 2 would only decrease my chances by 1-2%

In the end, I was so happy I followed the advice of the RE and conceived my DD ..

my first cycle on injectables i hyperstimmed and had mild OHSS. i wasnt doing IVF and switching wasnt an option at that time, so i had to cancel the cycle and wait it out and then go on BCP to allow my ovaries to calm down. it was a nightmare. the OHSS made me so bloated that i couldnt tie my shoe. i was so thirsty all of the time, but when i drank it made the bloating worse.

if your ovaries are hyperstimmed you might be better off waiting and doing FET. i havent been there so i cant relate but i do know its not entirely uncommon. furthermore it would be better for your overall health to transfer frosties when your system is healthy, then when it is hyperstimulated.

look at the bright side, you produced A LOT of eggs and will have a lot that will hopefully fertilize and give you frosties regardless of whether you have to transfer now or in the future!

First off, I am so sorry, i have had IVF setbacks and i know the frustration and dissapointment

Like pp's have said, its better to be safe than sorry.

Like some other people said at least you will have lots of eggs if it does become a FET
