So upset after DDs 1 year apt...
She is 13 months.... 30 inches... and 24 lbs... my doctor is concerned about her weight... we are switching to 2% milk.. and yogurt.. and have guidelines for her diet.. I am glad we got this early enough but to be honest.. she doesnt have snacks or anything unhealthy.. no juice, no cookies, just some cherios when we are out...
I am so sad because I have dealt with weight my entire life, and I dont want her to do the same..

Re: So upset after DDs 1 year apt...
My DS was really big at his one year appt too- 28 pounds! I am not sure of his height- I think it was around 34'.
Our ped was not concerned. like you, I made sure DS ate healthy- but he was still big and loved to eat!
However- his weight gain slowed significantly after that. He only gained 4 pounds his second year of life and at his two year about weighed 32 pounds (36" tall).
I did try and make sure that he was active- joined gym classes, trips to the park, etc. I think that helped a lot. Don't worry- this does not mean she will have a weight problem- at all. If you keep up the good habits-she will be fine.

Personally, I wouldn't really worry about it. After 1, their growth really does level off b/c they become SO active

My son was 28lbs at 1 year and my ped didn't have a single concern. My 6 month old is 22lbs.
I would personally talk to him about this, and I think whole milk is so much better for the 1st year. Her stats do not sound too big at all. I would without a doubt question him.

oh sweety - i personally don't think those habits can start THIS early....it's not like she can grab a donut if she wants one now!
you are doing your best, giving her healthy food, etc. if she wants food - she eats - at this age, that's what's important! as she gets more & more active - that'll change!

Re: So upset after DDs 1 year apt...
I would question the peds suggestion that you switch your DD to 2% milk. Babies need to have diets rich in fat (healthy fats though) for myelination to occur (during myelination the axons of the neurons develop a fatty myelin sheath that allows for the elctrical impulses the be transmitted at appropropriate speeds). Myelination occurs during the 1st 2 years of life which is why children are advised to drink regular milk until age 2.
Also, I wouldn't worry too much if you are feeding your DD a healthy diet. My DS is almost 7 months old and he just weighed in at 20 pounds, 2 ounces of Monday and his diet consists mainly of Alimentum, 2 tbsp of cereal and 2 ounces of a veggie a day which I make at home.

Re: So upset after DDs 1 year apt...
First I've dealt with the same issues and hope that DD doesn't have to struggle with this as well
Second, remember genetics play a part of development, so don't feel like you're doing something wrong by whatever you're feeding her
and lastly, I would listen to your PED, or if you're concerned, talk to her/him about it as a plan of action, instead of changing her diet based on recommendations here, JMO though

Re: So upset after DDs 1 year apt...
i will not give DS skim or 2% milk even if recommended by the ped. i can't believe they put 1 year olds on diets!!!! i just feel like whole milk is better for growing babies. and DS was 25 lbs at his 9 month appt (and 33" tall). 25 lbs at 9 months was only 75%!

I agree. Personally I think your doc is a tool for even making you feel bad. She's 1. She'll probably even out as she gets more active.

ITA! DD was 25lbs and over 30 inches at her one year appointment and the doctor wasn't concerned at all! Your DD is JUST fine!

i am going to do my own research...

Is she walking? I feel that DD's weight really tapered off after she was mobile.
It sounds like you are doing everything right so try not to get so upset about it.

Re: So upset after DDs 1 year apt...
I got the same talk at DS#2's 1 year check up.
Before everyone jumps on the ped's advice, 2% is still pretty fatty (whole milk is only 3.7% fat).
My ped gave us the same advice to switch and my cousin who is a ped confirmed that it is fine. Actually the AAP advices it as well.
The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) has revised its recommendation that babies that are weaned should be fed whole milk until they are 2 years of age. The new consensus is that reduced-fat 2% milk should be given to weaned infants between the ages of 12 months and 2 years, if they are at all at risk of being overweight, have a family history of high cholesterol, obesity or heart disease.
Peds have to walk a fine line with this topic. For us, our ped said it as gently as possible and when we went back for the next visit, DS's %ile was the exactly the same, but ped was so happy that it was leveling off.
Don't be too down on yourself. DS is the same way. he is actually the pickiest eater out of our family, so I was confused how it got to that point. They still have a lot of growing to do and while he is still solid, there is really not much extra fat on him now.

Thanks Erica.. this did help a lot.. I am planning to switch.... like I said, its more because of my own personal struggles that I feel like I am OCD with her... She is just starting to walk... so hopefully that will help too...
I hope to get different news at her 15 month checkup..

Re: So upset after DDs 1 year apt...
My DD was 27.8lbs and 32 inches at her 12 mos appt..she's also on 2% milk, BUT at her 15 mos appt she was 27lbs and 33 inches so she lost/didn't gain any weight and grew..so they do slow down..he's not concerned about here weight, bc she's been consistent and she's very tall, but he did want her to be on 2%...I was an extremely chubby baby and am perfectly normal weight right now as an adult..on the flip side, my DH was a thin baby and has struggled with his weight his entire adult life...don't worry, they slow down and thin out as they start getting more and more active!!!

Re: So upset after DDs 1 year apt...
then i may be in trouble b/c DS is 6 months and just over 18lbs.
once your daughter starts becoming really mobile they tend to lose their baby fat fast.
My DH was born at over 10lbs. He was a real chunker, even more so than our DS was and my MIL said that once he started crawling, walking, etc. he became a little stick..LOL.
I woudnt worry too much yet.

That doesn't sound bad to me. My DD is 5 months, and already 18 pounds and the doctor said she is "growing beautifully." I wouldn't be too concerned. As they become more active the weight burns right off.

Re: So upset after DDs 1 year apt...
Is DC walking yet? If not or if she's just starting, I wouldn't worry too much now--I think a lot of babies gain weight right before they start walking, but once they are moving and climbing, they tend to drop weight quickly.
DS is still on whole milk, but he's pretty skinny, in the 20th percentile for weight, so we were told to keep the whole milk. I have heard the AAP recommends 2% after a year for most children these days, so that doesn't sound unusual actually.
Try not to worry--I think if you are giving her healthy foods and teaching her to eat well, she'll be fine.

My daughter is about the same weight and height and she is 12 months. Her doctor did not seem concerned at all. From what I heard whole milk is best for a child because the milk fat is good for a childs developing brain.

Re: So upset after DDs 1 year apt...
That sounds perfect to me...I would ask another ped about the whole milk thing..sounds a little strange to me...
My 4 month old is 28 inches, and 19 lbs, so at a a year, he'll be around that...
My friends one year old 32 inches and 29 lbs....no diet whatsoever!
