So upset...DS LOST weight at his one year checkup

I'm so upset. DS is a terrible eater. We went for his one year checkup today and he actually lost one ounce this month. The ped is not so concerned but he is having us come back in 6 weeks for a weight check. He was always in the 50-90 percentile for weight (gradually decreased starting at 6 months). Did anyone's DC lose weight??? Any food suggestions with a lot of fat would be really appreciated!!!! TIA!!!

I don't think losing an ounce is too bad. It is really common for babies weight gain to taper off as they get older and more active- they are burning more calories.

Yogurt, cheese, etc are really good high calorie/high fat foods. Avocados are too.

An ounce? That is really nothing! He could have been inhaling instead of exhaling. Try not to worry. Chat Icon

haha. I know an ounce is not a lot to lose. I think what is upsetting me more is that he did not gain. Chat Icon

Re: So upset...DS LOST weight at his one year checkup

DS just had his 1 year and although he did gain some, he fell of the chart (he had been between the 5th and 10th percentile all along.

Our PED wasn't too concerned some of the things she suggested:

Add honey and butter to his veggies

add 1/2 a packet of carnation instant breakfast to his milk, once per day

add black strap molasses to his oatmeal (this helps with iron, she said his wasn't "low" but it could be higher)

she said no tuna, salmon, or shell fish but e can have white fish

DS isn't a great eater either, he won't eat a ton at one sitting. So i have been giving him snacks throughout the day

Re: So upset...DS LOST weight at his one year checkup

As they get more mobile, most kids tend to fall in the weight percentile. My secondborn Eliza went from the 100th percentile to the 50th in 3 months. But she also started walking like crazy (chasing her big sister keeps her moving like crazy).

My firstborn is a wisp, so I tend to try to give her higher fat foods like full fat soymilk (she has a milk allergy) and avocados. I also always cook with olive oil.

As your dc becomes more mobile (crawling & walking) they are going to gain weight slower & even lose some weight. I wouldn't be too concerned!

I know this will sound crude, but a really good poop weighs more than one ounce. Chat Icon Chat Icon

I wouldn't worry. My DS lost about 8 oz. between his 9 and 12 month appointments. He had a REALLY bad stomach virus about a week or two before the 12 month appointment, so I think that had a lot to do with it. Since he has always been in the 90-95th percentile for weight, the doctor wasn't really concerned about it.

Re: So upset...DS LOST weight at his one year checkup

My son also "lost" but they had measured him 1.75 pounds less than his previous visit! I was so worried but even then my Dr wasn't. Next time he went he was back to 22.4 which was close to where he was originally so we think the weight was a mis-weigh. I def. wouldn't worry about 1 oz.Chat Icon

Did he start walking recently? I know my ped mentioned it wasn't unusual to see a big slow or temp stop when they really get moving. 1 ounce isn't a concern - a wet diaper can mean a few ounce difference.

Re: So upset...DS LOST weight at his one year checkup

An ounce is not a lot to lose. As a few PP said, when they become more mobile, their weight drops. I have noticed that my DD (same age as your DS- exactly!) is moving around all over the place and she has thinned out because of it It seems like unless she's napping- she's on the move!

Re: So upset...DS LOST weight at his one year checkup

Abby never lost weight, but she did drop a percentile from the 10th to the 5th and the doctor had been concerned. I filled her up with healthy calories from good sources and she gained weight again. She had her 15 month visit yesterday (one month alte due to illness) and she is now a WHOPPING 20 pounds. FINALLY!

Re: So upset...DS LOST weight at his one year checkup

DS did lose weight at the one year check up, but he had started walking a few weeks before and could barely sit still. He had also been sick and ate poorly, so his doctor wasn't concerned. And sure enough, his weight was back at the old levels for his 15 month check. He has weighed in the 20th percentile pretty consistently, and at 1 year he dropped to the 10th! Then back up to 20th.
