Re: So wait--is it normal be nearly 40 weeks and NOT dilated at all?
Crashing-I think it's normal. At my 39 wk appt doctor said I was maybe a fingertip(I think this was with him pushing it)...at 40wk 2 days I was 1.5cm...I had the baby at 41 weeks exactly(on the day I was scheduled for induction). The night before I was scheduled to be induced I started having contractions and when I got to the hospital I was between 3-4 cm.

My sister was not dilated at all at 40. . I think it's pretty normal. . the whole 40 weeks thing is pretty much an estimate too so i wouldn't worry yet.
It must be frustrating though. .so I hope things start moving for you soon!

I was the same way at my 40 week appt, but ended up having DS that day anyway via Emergency C because my BP started to skyrocket

Re: So wait--is it normal be nearly 40 weeks and NOT dilated at all?
I think anything at the end is normal.
With my first I was barely a figertip dilated at my 39 week visit and my DS was born not even 48 hours later.
With my second I was dilated at 3 cm or 2 or 3 weeks and went 2 days late.
The one thing it does sound like to me though is that maybe your pelvis make be to small to deliver her vaginally. Did your doc ever mention that?

I think with your first, it's more normal than not. But my doc keeps stressing not to put much thought of it. You can be closed at an am appt and still go into labor within 24 hrs, just as someone can be 2 cm for weeks. That's why he's not a huge fan of internals.

Re: So wait--is it normal be nearly 40 weeks and NOT dilated at all?
i never dilated or effaced at all - baby stayed high so I had a csection at 40w2d.
i had very high fluid which prevented DS from dropping which is most likely why i never dilated or effaced

I was not dilated at all at 40 weeks with DS. I was only about a fingertip dilated when they induced me at 42 weeks. And I had lost my mucus plug, but still not dilated. It happens.

Same here!!
I was still not dilated or effaced at all at 41 weeks and ended up having a c-section.

Re: So wait--is it normal be nearly 40 weeks and NOT dilated at all?
I was out to dinner with a friend due the same day as me two sundays ago and she had her appointment a few days earlier and had zero progress. Her water broke Monday night and she had the baby Tuesday night.
Some bodies just work at different speeds than others.
It's been almost a week since my appointment where they said I was 2 cm and 75%... and NOTHING is going on.
This whole gestational time thing is such a crap-shoot.

at 40 weeks i wasn't dilated at all! DD came out of the blue 2 days late; I needed meds. in the IV at the hospital to get me to dilate even though i was contracting.

Re: So wait--is it normal be nearly 40 weeks and NOT dilated at all?
My water broke 2 days after my due date and when I got to the hospital I was still not dialted at all!
ETA: 12 hours into labor I was 100% effaced and only 2cm dialated. Baby's heart rate kept dropping dangerously low with Pitocin so I ended up with a c section.

Like the others said - anything is normal!
I went into labor on my due date - my water broke and I was having contractions. 8 hours later, I was 100% effaced but maybe 1 or 2 cm dilated. They gave me pitocin and DS was born about 7 hours after that.
Hopefully she is here soon

Totally normal. At my 40w appt I was neither effaced nor dilated...and Charlie came on her DD
Good luck - hope you're feeling well!!

uh oh--no! i didn't think there was any correlation btwn not dilating and pelvis size....i wonder if i should call and ask her.

At 41 weeks I was only 1cm and before that nothing.
I went in to the hospital to be induced at my 41 week mark and ended up having a c-section because this little guy did not want to come out.

Re: So wait--is it normal be nearly 40 weeks and NOT dilated at all?
Just called to ask about any connection btwn pelvis and not dilating; she said no and that my pelvis is totally adequate and that not dilating yet with a first baby is normal. But if I'm still not next week we're talking induction.

just as it is to be dialated for 1 cm for almost 4 weeks...then go to 5 cm in less then 12 hours

totally normal. in fact I NEVER dilated AT ALL (not even 1 cm) even after my water broke on its own at home, got cervadil twice and had contractions for 13 hours. ended up with a c section.
