So we got the dreaded MMR shot.

I hadn't been COMPLETELY convinced to get it yet and at his Ped appointment, they were like "today he gets his MMR vaccine!!"

I wasn't ready, but I knew I might never be. So we bit the bullet and he got it.

So stressful!!!!

Right there with you - I didn't know Ped did it at 12 months, so we just had it yesterday...

Lucas got his at 12 months and for as much as I feel strongly on my opinion about it...I still worried a bit.

Fortunately he had no side effects...although they are very common..I even marked the window for side effects on the calendar and waited and waited...very hard. Chat Icon

I was soo upset after he got it that I cried. There is just so pressure not to get it, get it, split it up. I was soo worried.

Andrew did have a very bad reaction to it a few days later but it can be up to a week later.

I cried too Chat Icon I was fine with all her other shots, just something about the pressure surrounding this one made it so much worse!!

My doctor told me to watch 10-14 days after the shot.

Re: So we got the dreaded MMR shot.

I hear ya, I called my Ped to find out what if any vaccinnes DS is schedule for on his next visit and they told me he is scheduled for the MMR & Varivax (chicken pox) shot, DH & I are considereing seperating them.

I just have all these "what ifs" in my head, its making me a little crazy.

I sometimes wish I had never seen the Oprah show on autism, its what really got into my head.

Oh man - I'm not looking forward to that!

Is the "window" for flu like symptoms / bad reaction to the shots, or a window for autistic like reactions to the shot?

The window is for a physical reaction to the vaccine...rash, fever, etc.

7-14 days is what my ped advised. DD ran a higher fever for about 24 hours and then was fine. Then she got a few spots which is what my ped told me to expect.

I hear you - I am pro vaccine but that doesn't mean I wasn't scared to give it to her - esp b.c I had a BAD reaction to MMR so bad they only gave me 1/2 doses when I was younger. But I was scared we were going to WDW soon and was concerned with people saying they get chicken pox and all these things. I figured with a high volume of foreign tourists you never know what someone will have or have left behind so I bit the bullet.

(I did not get the chicken pox shot at that visit I went back a month later for that).

DS got it yesterday and although I am confidant in my decision to give it to him and did a lot of research, I was still nervous at the moment she gave it!

I thought I was all prepared and then I got nervous then and there. It didn't help that DS cried his eyes out!

Re: So we got the dreaded MMR shot.

with these few recent measles exposures on LI I actually am LOOKING FORWARD to dd getting this vaccine! I know what you all mean though about the worry surrounding it - just remember what the original intention is for - that's what I do.

Re: So we got the dreaded MMR shot.

Can I ask - forgive my ignorance... why is everyone so concerned about this particular shot? I get that the chicken pox is a "newer" vaccine that we didn't have as kids so I can see some concern to be discussed with a doctor about as far as pros and cons/risks and benefits.

I ask b/c I remember getting the MMR shot before college and I don't remember having an issue at all - the Tetanus shot hurt worse, at least to me. I still believe the shots are all better than the risks associated with the disease... but that's JMO.

there is a lot of controversy about whether or not there are links to this shot and autism, especially in boys.

Re: So we got the dreaded MMR shot.

Lauren, I know it must be nerve-racking. Just be glad it's over.

They sprung it on me at his 12 month appt. that they would give it to him that day with chicken pox. I was completely unprepared and fortunately because of matthew's delay doc. had no problem putting it off until he is 2 because he knew I had a lot of my mind already. We're going to do it by 24 months.
