The focus of the MMR vaccine and possible autism and developmental side effects is on children ages 12-18 mo. Have there been any studies showing that if you delay the shot until age 2 or 3 that the "risks" are still the same from the MMR vaccine or that children are less likely to develop autism, etc.? Most of the stories I hear or have read are about children under the age of 2. I dont remember ever reading a story about a child who was 3 who go the MMR vaccine and than regressed. But I can't imagine age could have anything to do with it...I dont know...so confusing.

I *think* the reason that most people delay until after 2 is because 2 is when most signs of autism are clearly evident. So, by waiting until after (say 3), if your kid was going to have autism it would already be evident (in most cases).
However, I think I have also heard that most kids who show signs of autism at 18months or 2 years of age also showed milder signs of autism all along. 2 just happens to be the benchmark. Lipglossjunkie posted about it not too long ago-she works in the field. Maybe she can elaborate for you.

I don't think there have been any studies on the benefits of delaying the MMR -- that's a reason my old Ped gave for trying to keep me on schedule -- he said there was no proof delaying it would help.
I think the lack of anecdotal "evidence" of the MMR being linked to autism for older children is why so many people (myself included) just decide to err on the safe side and give the shot after the child is 2.
I'm splitting the MMR, but DS will not ge the measels portion until after he is 2.

Thanks...that's what I was wondering. There is so much focus on kids under 2, just wondering if they ever looked at the outcome of those that delayed the shot until after 2.
