So whats the deal with inductions?
Are you allowed to eat? drink? walk around?
Last time I went into labor on my own and was able to walk around the hospital, so I was just wondering if its the same for inductions
can you tell this is nervous chatter?

Re: So whats the deal with inductions?
They told me I would have to stay still in bed for an hour or 2 after they insert it. After that, they let me get up and go to the bathroom and they gave me a turkey sandwich. I wasn't able to walk around because I was hooked up to an IV and was having my blood pressure monitored the entire time.

Re: So whats the deal with inductions?
I was hooked up to what seemed like million machines plus an IV. Everytime I had to go to the bathroom I had to disconnect everything and drag the IV with me. It was easier just to stay in bed. Once they gave me the Epi then there was no getting out of bed. They put a catheter in.

I don't know if I would use the word violent, but my induction was scary as hell, I went from feeling no contractions to being in full blown labor in about 10 minutes. They couldn't get that epidural in me fast enough!!!
But I would be careful about using the word violent...

Yeah all that. But I thought it was because I had preeclampsia so I had like 40 million machines on me too.

wasn't my choice of words to be careful bout using.. .. those were the doc's words.. ...like u said, u went from nothing to full labor in 10 minutes.. the fact that u go from nothing to full labor in less than 30 minutes is what makes it violent.. to quell any uneasiness i might have caused i'll say forceful..
wanna add.. in case i made a soon to be mom or potential induction mom upset.. that that labor i spoke of was my first and only labor.. (i'm pregnant again and it's 8 yrs later..) so maybe it was normal, in terms of the amount of pain i felt.... i didnt have a reference base if that make sense.. and also being that it was 8 yrs ago, i'm sure it's easier now (?) technology is forever changing, so i'm sure it's more comfortable now..

Re: So whats the deal with inductions?
I was induced and it took 12 hours from start to finish.
I guess I was lucky since I can't say that it was violent. I did have contractions very quickly after they inserted the cervidil, but they took it out after only 90 minutes and labor progessed on it's own.
I was not allowed to eat or drink anything the entire time, and I was also hooked up to iv's the entire time and had to unhook them to use the bathroom (I only got up once, and had to use the dreaded bed pan another time). I also didn't walk around, but I never even asked if I could nor did they suggest it.
I hope this eased your fears a little.

It's not like that for everyone...
I was induced with my 2nd and it was a better experience than my first delivery where I went into labor on my own. My first labor was 20 hours and I pushed for 2 hours. I know that first deliveries may take longer but I'll take the induction any day.
I went into the hospital around 10pm on a Monday night. Got the cervadil around 11:30pm and at that point I had to say in the bed. The next morning around 10:30am they took it out, let me shower, gave me breakfast and I walked for a bit. They started the pitocin around 11:30am and at 1pm I requested an epi. At 5:30pm, I felt the urge to push so they called my doc at her office. She got there at 6pm, after 3 pushes, my son was born at 6:20pm.

Re: So whats the deal with inductions?
I was induced last week. My induction went fairly quickly. I will be posting my birth story shortly. I was not allowed to eat anything. All I could have was ice chips. I was not able to get up as I had an IV, was under blood pressure monitoring, and had the fetal and contraction monitor attached to my stomach. I had to use a bed pan. (I got a little gun shy a few times with that )

Re: So whats the deal with inductions?
it wont be so bad.. try not to be nervous.. ( i know i know.. this coming from the lady who said it hurt like h*ell..) but if u'r practiced with natural childbirth then u'll just use those techniques and methods that helped you with the other pregnancies... i wish i had the guts to consider a natural child birth.. as for me.. shucks i'd prefer them just put me to sleep and wake me up when the baby is out..

Re: So whats the deal with inductions?
With my induction, they started pitocin (sp) the night before I actually delivered. Like you, I was about 2-3 cm dialated already. So pitocin started around midnight, I was given something to help me sleep. I woke up about 6am and was only 4 cm dialated. Around 10:30, my water broke. At some point, they stopped the pitocin because the baby wasn't responding well. I progressed pretty easily. Around 3 or 3:30 and about 7 cm, I asked for an epidural. The doctor came about 45 minutes later and I was 10cm dialated but not ready to push since the baby didn't decend as of yet. I got the epi at around 4:30 for some quick relief...started pushing soon after and Molly was born at 5:41.
All in all, I had a really good experience.
