so, while looking for a dog...I can't believe how often I see pit bulls!
It's rampant! Almost every third dog that is listed to be adopted is a Pit Bull. It's a shame. Why are they bred so often? It's for bad reasons, right?
It just seems like there are way more pit bulls to be adopted even than there were 5 years ago!

And if you go in and play with them, they are the sweetest mooshes in the place!
I used to go to the SPCA shelter up by my college on a weekly basis (just to play with the animals there), and out of 20 pens, 14 were usually pits. They all have to go through temperment testing before the shelter would let them be adoptable...so these were just big, mooshy, babies that needed homes, but they're so stereo typed that no one would even look at them. 
they are over bred because in the right circles a pure bred is an expensive dog... but when no one wants them, they are left stigmatized and alone. 
(Sorry, had to chime in because it breaks my heart)

To be honest, I only believe half of them are actually pit bulls. A lot of mutts turn out looking like pits so they just call them that. Then also there are tons of different breeds of pit bulls so that expands it even more. And then it's true, they are often bred for fighting, but I don't think that's always the case.
It's heart breaking. And I won't lie, I was extremely wary of pit bulls before we got ours. I've heard the horror stories and the "lock jaw" (which is not true, by the way) and it's hard NOT to be influenced by that. But then I met Lucy and she changed my mind completely. She is 100% an advocate for her breed. If I was asked which dog I trusted more with a child- I would say my pit bull over my COLLIE mix in a heartbeat. THAT'S how good she is.

My friend's daughter has 3 pits, and they are the best behaving mushes around.
Never thought a pit would be a lap dog, but Honey kept laying her head on my leg and then trying to jump into my lap until she finally suceeded.
I too was scared of pits because of their reputation, but I have no fear around Knuckles, Honey and Magnum.

its all about how they are raised/treated... i have had 3 Pitts in my life... all were the most obedient loving dogs ive ever owned.

It truly is. If you look into the history of pit bulls they used to be used as "nanny dogs" because they are so gentle and loyal. It boggles my mind how they got to the point they are at today.
