People need to stop thinking you need to be a cool 62 degrees all summer, sweating sometimes lets you know you're alive. Turn the central AC off when its not that hot. LIPA is raping us on a daily basis, we are paying some of the highest energy rates in the US and as long as the demand stays high they'll need to keep adding surcharges to find more energy sources & whatever other lies they come up with.
It's one thing to debate regarding the SUVs and such.
But as far as the centeral AC goes, yes it may be a little excessive to keep the AC at 62. But what do you consider "not too hot"?
I am one of those people that has trouble sleeping when I am hot. There is nothing worse than sleeping in a pool of my own sweat.
Are you goind to say that I should only put the CAC on when its 90 degrees out?

I guess this is exactly the point.
we'll do things that are easy...but put the brakes on at the thought of being uncomfortable..
what is that is exactly what saving the earth meant....that you'd have to adjust to sleeping without A/C....would you do it?
ftr, I don't sleep well when I am hot either. but we went the whole of last summer without using the AC. I got used to it. and we sleep in a TWIN bed.

people all around the world sleep in a pool of their own sweat every night. You should do what suits you, if keeping your home cool at night is what makes you happy & comfortable-that is what you should do. I know plenty of people that leave their homes empty 11 or 12 hours a day with the CAC on 62. I find that to be an insane waste of our precious resources.
We are only 5% of the world's population but we use approx 30% of the words resources. I'm horrified by that & I personally used the A/C in my home less than 5 days last summer. I feel better about myself as a human being & mother, I feel better about my LIPA bill & I feel like I said Eff You to George Bush & his oil buddies.
Do what makes you feel good.

the great oprah(I'm really NOT a fan) has on a couple that are trash pickers. They are a doctor & engineer & they pick trash to find stuff people throw out because they are appalled at how much is wasted. Once Oprah jumps on the "less is more" concept the whole country of sheep will listen.
Are they Freegans?
no but I believe the woman that was on before them was a Freegan-I missed her segment. I'm a partially-freegan

Well I agree to leave your CAC on 62 degrees while you are out all day is just crazy. And if you can live with the heat of the summer with just putting your AC on 5 days during the summer then I commend you.
But in my house, if my AC isn't on the actual room temperature according to my thermostat reads 80 degrees minimum. I've seen it go up to 90 degrees at times.
I actually went out and had CAC installed last fall. I haven't used it yet since they didn't finish the install until it was too cold out to run.
I had a high efficient 16seer unit put in to at least try to save on electric. I am hoping that my electric bill will go down compared to last summer when I was stuck running ACs in three separate rooms on two floors.

Re: so yeah...oil touched $102 a barrel and the dollar is at a record low
what happened? It's simple
our $ is weak because of BUSH. Normally, presidents have little influence on the economy, but our little rocket scientist decided to go to war on CREDIT.... and instead of instituting a draft, he is paying six figure salaries for contractors.... he drove up our national debt at exponential levels, which in turn drove down our $. The no bid contract sweetheart deals didn't help the budget either.
Things not related to Bush:
Lack of regulation of the banking sector (another gift to lobbyists) encouraged everyone to go into super debt with their mortgages, car loans, and credit cards. 20 years ago, you would have NEVER been able to get 90% of your home equity refinanced to do something as trivial as go on vacation or buy overpriced barbecue supplies.
we also outsourced all of our manufacturing, and the bulk of our economy is goods/services being sold within our own country.... that's pretty bad.
we've become a debtor society. China now OWNS us.... our gov't owes theirs more money than we can even imagine.
It's inevitable that we take a nose-dive. we produce nothing and consume everything.
just wait until the US$ is no longer used for international transactions such as oil sales.... we'll automatically become destitute.
as for peak oil.... all manufacturing has been moved to china and india... the 2 countries with the most people. they are now industrializing at a rocket's pace. they want to consume as much as we do (basically they'll never be able to, since the earth simply can't sustain that). At any rate, they're now consuming much more oil. And reserves are already running out. supply and demand.....

At what point will the price of gas be so high that you would be willing to say to yourself, "Today I'm gonna leave the car home and I'm gonna walk a mile to the supermarket, I'm gonna buy all my groceries and lug them back home a mile in my arms". I'm guessing that price would have to be pretty high, especially if you live in the suburbs.
I actually walk a mile to the grocery store every week. We only drive if we're out and it's on the way, or in inclimate weather. We carry our groceries in reusable canvas bags. It's a totally attainable goal and it frustrates me when people look at us like we have 4 heads because of it. Not saying I'm perfect, but it's one of the small, everyday things I do to try to keep the world from falling to shite.

yes just about everything we rely on is made from petroleum and/or plastic products. I wonder how that happened. Its our constant insatiable need for cheap, disposable products not so coincidentally another reason why our dollar is becoming the new peso. If we stop accepting cheap products from china & insist on better, longer lasting american made products then we would really see a change. Planned obsolescence is what this country has built itself on for the last 50 years, it was a greedy, wasteful plan.

And I woke up this morning, heard the news about the white defending what's fair for oil companies, not giving a crap that people can't afford to heat their homes and I remembered another favorite quote "if you think our wars over oil are bad, wait until we are fighting over water"
