Social Security Disability-long-UPDATE!!!!!
I got a call from them yesterday on my cell but missed it. When I called back I found that it wasn't an incoming line so I called the 800 number. After 20 minutes I got a human who told me that a decision was made on my brother's app on July 12. Wow! That is super quick..usually it takes 100 days and that's 45 days! The lady couldn't tell me whether it was approved or denied but if SS was contacting me (the representative payee for my brother) why would they call if it was denied? The lady also said that I should have received the decision in the mail already. I didn't get anything so I'm thinking a few things:
1) they sent something to my address with my brothers name so it bounced back to them. Maybe the address change is not complete for him.
2) They sent something that got lost in the mail and they needed a response from me.
3) They denied him and I need to start proceedings for an appeal and hearing.
Now, I think that if they made a decision and I should have gotten something in the mail and didn't respond and they are waiting for info from me such as bank account info..etc...he was approved.
I'm trying not to be too optomistic considering the reputation that SSA has but if anyone can make sense of this, I would appreciate it.
Also, prayers help. I am praying he was approved.
I put a call into the Mineola office this morning and left a message with one of the reps. I guess if I don't hear after lunch I will call again.
Update! I just heard. he was approved! And, I have to get some other documentation about his health coverage and he can qualify for more money through SSI!!!!

kinda weird there was a decision already. Maybe there was a denial based on receiving other info but I'm trying not speculate.

Don't think like that. DH's was approved right away also in the beginning, But only for a yr. Than we had to fight to continue to benefits. But it WAS approved the 1st time around.

It was approved in about 60 days.

It was approved in about 60 days.

My mom received her decision on SS disability in less than 30 days and she was APPROVED! So I hope it is the same for Freddy!

I made my application for SSD on 2/1/07 and didn't receive anything until the last week of July. My ssd and my sons ssd were both approved and the funds were direct deposited in the bank. That's how we knew we got approved. It wasn't until almost two weeks later that we got a letter stating the approval and such.
The only time I heard from anyone from SSD in btween those nearly six months was when they needed me to get more more medical records. Perhaps this is the case? I believe your brother has been in two seperate facilities and perhaps they only received one?
Also, just so you know, it is HARD to deal with SSA, I have waited DAYS for a call back.

this is his 3rd facility and if he is going to get approved the checks won't start until Oct because you have to be disabled 6 months.
The person on the 800 number told me I should have received something. I will keep calling SSA just to be a PIA. Sorry yours took so long. You would think they could make this a little easier considering the people tha apply are desperate and cannot work. How awful to be treated like that.
If they are calling me for more info that's ok, but they said the decision was made.
Also, they said the decision could change depending on the circumstances. But the couldn't tell me what the decision was!!!

I did research on ssd and learned it could take some people up to two years to get approved.
If/when you do, your first check will be back pay from your first eligible day
80% of people who apply get denied the first time, of those that appeal about 70% get denied
If you have to appeal, there is a higher success rate if you get a SS attorney
Medicare doesn't kick in until the second year
Just some general info to share.
My gut is that he got approved, if he was denied I feel like they would have said the decision could be appealed instead of saying it could change.

that's my gut feeling as well. After all, why would they call me if they denied him? It seems obvious to me that they are waiting for a response from me about something I didn't get in the mail.
I would have surely seen something in the mail from SSA and torn the envelope to shreds trying to get the answer.
Coming to the realization that he really is disabled for the first time now. I'm sure he's been thinking that way too. He knows he won't work again. he knows his deficits. Makes me sad for this tough man who didn't need anyone.

the lady at SSA said that the person I spoke to on the 800 number should have told me what the decision was. Tsk!
She was really nice too and is trying to get him the most benefit.
She said they get a bad rep, but so far I'm extremely pleased with my experience.

Just got home and I told Fred. He was happy and relieved as well. He was glad we didn't have to use an attorney.
