Social Security Office in Melville...
Anybody been there recently? Is it a busy office?
Also, anybody ever take longer than 2yrs to change their maiden name to their married name? (I'm going on 4. )
Just wondering what documentation they need since they said it's different for those when the time period has been over 2 years.
TIA!!!!

Re: Social Security Office in Melville...
I think I was there for about an hour when I went (it was over three years ago, so I really can't remember!!).
And no recollection of what I had to bring other than my marriage license.

I did it a year ago. I tried to get there as soon as it opened. I lucked out though the guard gave me somones Number who left, so i got in and out fairly quickly. i brought my marriage license, birth certificate and my old SS card (they want the old one.)

Re: Social Security Office in Melville...
I was there about six weeks ago. Really wasn't that bad. I waited about 1/2hr. I went on my lunch break. I thought it would be a lot worse.

Re: Social Security Office in Melville...
It's a hit and miss. I have waited as little as 15 minutes and as long as 1 hour.

Thanks for the info girls!!! I'm just debating whether I should bring DD with me or whether I should go on a day when DH can stay home with her.

Re: Social Security Office in Melville...
I went on a weekday as soon as they opened, I was in and out very fast.
I waited about 4 months, I had to work quickly in the end because I wanted all my paperwork changed before to my married name before the baby was born in March. I was scrambling at SS and DMV at months pregnant

Re: Social Security Office in Melville...
LOL the reason i opened your post was to see if this was about changing your name. I was married July 06 and still havent done it and quite honestly, have no plans to any time soon

I changed over my license, but never changed anything else over (financial/CCs, SS card, passport). Now it's coming back to bite me in the azz.
I'm traveling to Canada in 3 weeks and my plane ticket has my married name, my passport has my maiden name and there's not enough time for me to renew my passport (they're really backed up). Now I'm praying that Customs and Immigration on both sides won't hassle me, despite bringing my marriage certificate.

Re: Social Security Office in Melville...
I deal with Social Security offices all the time for work and I think that the Melville office has better service than several of the others on LI. That does not mean that you won't wait, though!

Re: Social Security Office in Melville...
I changed my SS # in the Melville office. I went with a book expecting it to be hours, and I was in and out in 20 minutes. I broght jmy old SS card with me and I think that was all I needed, along with my marriage license.

Re: Social Security Office in Melville...
I havent changed anything married in 05, when we traveled to Europe oct 05 my passport was up for renewal and I was told my plane ticket had to match the passport name NO exceptions, so I had to renew my passport with my maiden name since that is what was on the plane ticket. Otherwise I was going to start changing everything over when I had to do my passport but there was no time to start with a name change.
the airline would NOT except a marriage certificate either, I called and tried to change my name they wouldnt accept. this was American Airlines.

True! Plane ticket MUST match passport or ID. No marriage license would be accepted. My plane tickets are still with my maiden name when I travel with my passport which still has my maiden name (which is still not changed!!).
