Social Security Survivor Benefits
I tried looking this up on SS website but I can't seem to get a clear answer.
When a person receiving SS retirement benefits dies, does the family of the deceased receive some sort of lump sum payment to cover the funeral expenses or some other expenses?

You get a whopping $255 as the death benefit, just enough to buy a flower arrangement.
You have to prove relationship to the deceased. If there is a spouse, it goes to them first, child next.

All you get is $255. How do I receive the Lump Sum Death Payment after a relative dies?

The benefit is $255.
It ONLY goes to a surviving spouse. If there is no surviving spouse it will only go to a MINOR or DISABLED child.

Thanks for asking about this and thanks to those who gave the correct info! We were totally misinformed and thought the ss death benefit payout would pay the remaining balance for my dad's funeral - guess not!!!

It stinks that it's only $255 -- since I'm sure some families would need more, but at the same time I can understand why it's so low.
