So...just had my first appt....they weren't the nicest people in the world...UPDATED to add another nasty comment I just remembered
Ok, so if you remember my Dr didn't want to see me until 7 weeks, but I really wanted the pregnancy confirmed and I wanted my blood taken to test my beta levels, etc. I am 4 weeks.
Well, the nurse practioner (i didn't even meet with the Dr.) starts out the conversation by saying how inappropriate it is that I am there. She had a really bad lisp and kept saying "mmmkayyy?" which was weird. Then she tells me that I lose "all control the minute you get pregnant"....trying to tell me that I need to chill out with the timeline of things.
I'm sorry, but this is a baby growing inside me! How wrong is it to be there early? I want to make sure everything is ok, plus I have never even used this Dr. before (just moved to the neighborhood).
She wrote me a prescription for prenatals...how long would I have gone without them had I not made the appt for today? UGH.
And then she drops the bomb on me that since they are a "group practice" that I will be seeing many diff Dr's during my 9 months and that "whoever is on duty when you go into labor" will be my labor Dr. WHAT??? Sorry, but this makes me uncomfortable. But, it's a great hospital (Summit Overlook in NJ), and the group is recommended to me, so I'm pretty much stuck.
Anyway, they took blood and I will know my beta results and the confirmation of the pregnnacy later this afternoon or Monday.
Thanks for letting me vent
ETA to add: I forgot to mention that the NP asked me how I knew to take a pregnancy test so early. I explained how I have been temping and watching my temps go above coverline. She said "stay off the internet - it will make your life and our lives easier" As-if! She obviously doesn't like us to be well-informed.

You are definately not stuck- I switched doctors in between my miscarriage and my next pregnancy(which was about a month apart). I am so glad I did- I love my doctor and her partner and unless I go into labor when she is off on Thursdays, I will have her as my delivery doc.

she sounds like a wierdo....but....
what she said about the doctors is correct. They will make you see all the doctors throughout your pregnancy, whoever is on call when you go into labor will deliver your baby, that is standard practice.....

Sorry they treated you like that. If you want some other doctor recommendations let me know - I like my group and my friend goes to a group that she loves in the area as well.

I have a great Dr, and my first visit was also with a NP. This is fine as far as I am concerned b/c it is only for a pelvic & blood work. HOWEVER, she should not have given you any grief over being there early in the PG & definitely should not have made reference to you "losing control." IMO that is not the kind of support you need. I'd let your Dr know about how she handled your first visit.

yes, I am def going to say something to the dr. she was very unprofessional and was rolling her eyes at everybody and everything. i def felt guilty for being there and that is not the kind of feeling i want. i am so emotional right now and she was like, "you're like 2 seconds pregnant"....just everything she said was demeaning and not positive. I want to feel excited about my little bean and that is not how i felt while i was there

My doctor's office has 10+ doctors and my dr. assured me he would deliver my baby - he delivers 90% of his patients' babies, so I have always only seen him. The only time he doesn't is if he is away. I guess it really depends on the practice. I definitely don't think she should have spoken to you that way and maybe you should think about switching.

Re: So...just had my first appt....they weren't the nicest people in the world...
Wow... Talk about working in the wrong field. Nobody should talk to a patient that way. It was way out of line. Especially on the "chill out" part.
Honestly, if you don't get a good vibe you might need to switch practice. You need to feel comfortable, safe, at ease with this office.
- I did not see my doctor either. I saw the PA. She was really nice and explained a lot to me. I really felt at ease with her. She took her time and told me I would be seeing her a lot (with the doctor) - I will see my doctor for the sonogram - Yes, your doctor may not be available on the day of your labor. You will need to meet the other doctors. I personally would like to meet all of the "potential" delivery doctors. My DH also told me he would like to meet whoever could deliver our baby.

Re: So...just had my first appt....they weren't the nicest people in the world...
all doctor's offices are different. my office is also a "group" and I see a bunch of different doctors and whoever is on call will deliver this baby. I'm fine with it and have met all the doctors and they are all very nice. My first appointment I met with a RN- honestly at four weeks, there isn't much you can see or they can do for you. I didn't see my doctor or have an ultrasound until I was 8 weeks. When I saw the RN I think I was around 6 weeks, and at that time, she gave me the prenatal prescription.
If you aren't OK with the office, you might want to switch somewhere else or to a single practitioner. Don't feel "stuck" there- it's so early in your pregnancy it shouldn't be too hard to switch.

Re: So...just had my first appt....they weren't the nicest people in the world...
Hi, I am new to this board but read your post and had to respond. I had the same exact experience with the same NP...from Summit Medical Group, right? I met with her when I was pregnant and she made me feel awful. She actually used the same line about control and rolled her eyes a lot and just made me feel stupid. I have no idea why she is so difficult. But, I stuck with SMG and never had to see her again until after I had the baby, at which point she was super sweet. The doctors in the practice are all really great and I would not let her deter you from using them. What they said about the 9 doctors is true, though, and I only met the doctor who did my c-section once before the surgery (it was not planned) so if that is an issue, you might want to consider changing practices. But I really loved SMG and Overlook (all private rooms, wonderful nurses) and am currently 26 weeks pregnant and am happily using them again. And, the NP was so much nicer the second time around, no eye rolling at all!!

Re: So...just had my first appt....they weren't the nicest people in the world...
Sorry you had a lousy visit.
I actually chose a group practice so that I could get to know all the doctors and there wouldn't be a surprise person delivering our baby.
When you work with a private practice with only one doctor, if they happen to be away when you give birth you may wind up seeing a total stranger. Not that it happens all the time, but it could.
My doctor told me the same thing - that I would rotate docs during the pregnancy visits but she's my point of contact and if there is ANY doctor out of the 6 that I don't like, I can tell her and she'll do her best to coordinate things so I won't deliver with that doc.
Hope your next visit goes better or you find a new place!
I'm in NJ too (Morris County)!!

Well IMO 4 weeks is early to go to the Dr. There is a reason we wait for 8 weeks.. but ehh to each his own .I know I was impatinet but last time I went very early as well and it wound up being a chemical pregnancy..
I also go to a group of Dr's and told the same thing ... ( not sure why that would be considered rude ) to each his own if you don't want that then switch .

Re: So...just had my first appt....they weren't the nicest people in the world...UPDATED to add another nasty comment I just remembered
Somoene told me that if I ever felt the slightest bit uncomfortable with my gyno or office, to leave ASAP and find another - you dont want to feel that way at any point of your pregnancy - esp. the beginning....
I would switch - I am sure other dr's are affiliatde with your hospital of choice!
Good luck!
ETA: I found out I was PG at 5 weeks, and no matter what I said, they said that I really cont come in til 8 wks - it seems to be the "rule" - they agreed to 7 wks because I was going to leave for Thailand for my HM the 8th wk and I wanted them to chcek me out before I left, but even that they said was early - so at least dont be upset about that part - but everything else was inappropriate!

OK That is incredibly unnecessary. Why should any of this be easier on her life?
She is definitely in the wrong profession. Sorry you have to even deal with her

I changed for some of the same BS u described. They set me up with a NP on my initial visit, gave me a bag full of prenatals, and didnt do a pregnancy test. I was livid but I changed. You are never stuck. This is YOUR experience... make it a good one!

My first OB told me not to read anything.....uhhh yeah ok god.
Honestly I think you should see another Dr. -- or should I say, a new OB. Your first visit should me calming and encouraging. And the OB should be the one to meet with you first and give you the low-down. I hope you try another OB, you can schedul an office visit somewhere else and then decide.
Good luck!!

You should not have been treated that way. That was just awful. If it were me I would change practices. I like the idea of seeing 1 doctor, but thats me.

I am sorry the NP was rude to you...My Dr.s office also works the same way. There are 3 Dr.s and who ever is on call when baby decides to come, will deliver. I've met 2/3 and the 3rd one I meet next..He delivered my sister's baby so it should be good!

the "whoever is on duty" is a pretty standard practice, so I won't let that rule your decision about whether or not to stay at that office.
I kinda agree that 4 weeks is too early to be seen, but there are certainly better ways for them tohandle it, you're certainly not the first nervous preggo they have encountered. If they are so against it, why didn't they just fax a RX for your blood to be drawn somewhere else???
I think it is also standard practice to start prenatals at the 6-8 week mark, so I wouldn't stress about that.
Sorry you were treated that way.

your post just made me sooo mad. I have smoke coming out of my ears, because I know just the type of person you are talking about. The nurse practitioner who really wanted to be a doctor but didn't and now she has a chip... or has a chip for whatever reason...
Get out, get out, get out....or make sure you never see her again.
I truly hope the next time you see this monster you tell her she was totally unprofessional and made you feel really uncomfortable. She should not be allowed to treat anyone that way...especially in such a delicate situation such as pregnancy.
good luck!!
