Solids...some questions/opinions
So last night I gave Lucas some sweet potatoes...made them on Sunday. Sunday he enjoyed them...yesterday not so much.
He made a gagging face twice and then eventually threw up just a little. So we stopped. Should I back up and just do the oatmeal this week? Was it a fluke? Maybe my sweet potatoes were too thick?

Can you mix it with the oatmeal - I've found that Jack doesn't like the fruits alone - but when mixed with a little bit of oatmeal (or cereal) he gobbles it right up.

Re: Solids...some questions/opinions
I was going to say maybe they were too thick. Try mixing some formula (or breast milk, if you go that route). Once you're tried apples, you can mix apple juice in to make it thinner.
At this stage, even if YOU think it's not thick, they do. It should be really runny. Then get thicker as you go along.

Re: Solids...some questions/opinions
I would try it again. I read somewhere it takes 10 times before you can see if they like it.

Thanks! This is a huge help and definitely something I want to try.
So now I need to ask...how exactly do I make the sweet potatoes thinner? I have BM and can use that but what exactly should I do?

Re: Solids...some questions/opinions
I'd keep trying with the sweet potatoes, but follow his lead. If he starts gagging or refusing, then stop for the feeding. Try again next time. Mixing them with something he already likes (oatmeal, fruit), will help with the gagging. I have to mix all new foods with fruit to get Thomas to accept it until he gets used to it. He LOVES fruit. All veggies and now the meats, make him gag until he is used to them.
Good luck!

Re: Solids...some questions/opinions
I did a tablespoon of sweet potatoe and 1 oz of BM when we started. It creamed it up a bit. Did you mix anything in it when you made it?
I would try again. The first few times he only ate about 5 spoons. At daycare yesterday he ate the whole thing
We're going to try squash tomorrow when I'm home with him

I tried to put a little water from the pot into the food processor but maybe it wasn't enough. I am going to mix BM with it tonight and try again. I keep thinking it is too thick.
Can you have Daniel speak to Lucas about this...get him on track?
He opens his mouth to take the food (which is so adorable) but then looks at me like what is this?!

Same here. I always have to mix the fruits and veggies right now with the cereal. I make a little less cereal.

I made it VERY thin the first few times and mashed it a bit more with the spoon. So maybe adding a bit more will help. (I also read that adding the BM adds a familiar taste when starting solids.)
Daniel has also been eating BM slushies at daycare since he was about 4 months old. So that might have helped with the spoon, because he started swallowing right away.
I'll have a talk with him tonight and encourage him to help get Lucas on track

Re: Solids...some questions/opinions
You are all the best!!! I seriously think it's way too thick so tonight I will either add a little to the watery oatmeal or just but in some BM and mix it up.
When I made it I must not had added enough water to the food processor. It's super creamy but definitely thick. Next batch will have to be thinner....now I want to go make more to make it better.
