Some infant carrier advice...
I am a lurker on this board still
Anyway, there have been a lot of posts lately about infant seats and the weight limits. Some moms are opting for certain seats because of the higher weight limits etc..
So here is my 2 cents:
Sadie was 8lbs at birth. She is currenly 5.5 months and probably around 18lbs.
I can BARELY carry her in the infant seat anymore. Most of the time I leave it in the car and take her in and out that way. There is NO WAY I would be carrying a 20+lb kid in there, and DEF not a 35lb kid
The only reason I havent put in her other seat yet is because the snap-n-go is sooooo convienent if she is asleep.
Just wanted to give you girls a heads up if you were between seats...
PS.. if anyone would like, they can try carrying sadie around in there anytime lol

I'm still a lurker also!
DS is also 5.5 months and weighs 15 lbs 8 oz (just weighed today!). I too take him in and out of the car seat instead of using the snap and go. I use the snap and go for quick trips to the store. But, boy, is carrying that car seat getting heavy!

Re: Some infant carrier advice...
I totally agree! DS is 7.5 months and just about 18lbs and I can barely manage it anymore but it is so convenient. But there is no way in H E L L I'll be carrying it still when he is near the weight limit. Good tip!

ITA! I stopped carrying DS around in it LONG before he reached the weight limit, him+carrier was just to darn heavy. He was 8.7 at birth.

Re: Some infant carrier advice...
I can't even imagine carrying around a 20+ lb baby in an infant seat! From research i've done (I obviously don't have experience yet), I don't think they made the 30 or 32 lb limit car seats so that you can carry around a 30 lb baby in them. We went with a 30 lb limit infant seat so that she can stay in it longer rear facing in the car, which is the safest position when they're young. Also so we can get more use out of it without having to switch to a convertible seat so soon.

Well they have to stay refacing for AT LEAST a year anyway, so I guess it is just preference if you want to keep them in the infant carrier or switch sooner. I dont know anyone that actually kept the baby in the infant carrier until one year. DD is very tall and on the big side for her age and she does not have much more room in there.

Re: Some infant carrier advice...
As a BTDT mom I completely agree. DS hit the height limit for the carrier at 5 months. The other mommies are completely correct when they say that even though the carrier can hold 32 lbs it is honestly not something I could ever see a 32 lb child comfortable in. The convertible car seat also is rear facing and you are supposed to keep a child rear facing for a year and 20 lbs. HTH

Yes, that's true... a year and 20 lbs. I'd just hate to get only a few months use out of the 20 lb weight limit infant carrier if she hits 20 lbs really early. I know a few people who kept the infant seat in their car for a year or more b/c they had tiny kids and the 30 lb weight limit infant seat. We also liked how heavy/sturdy the larger weight limit infant seat was, but you're totally right it's definitely what you prefer. Thanks for the info/advice!

ITA with Jenn.
And let me just give you a little more perspective: my DS is OVER two and is only 29lbs!

Yea, you are right about the usage factor too. Right now she is 5.5 months and I can't see us using it too much longer. Another thing to think about is the actual ease of strapping them in. Like I said, DD is running out of room in there and I keep the seat in the car most of the time. My seat in in the middle of my backseat and it is really kind of annoying to try and strap her in the infant seat like that.
I took out the convertible caseseat to make sure it would fit refacing in our cars and it was SO much easier to manuaer and deal with cause everything wasnt so "snuggled" around her so to speak. Because of this she also gets extremely hot in there. She is a "sweaty" kid which Im trying to get used to cause I really dont sweat. I feel so bad when I take her out of there and she is all clammy and hot. I'm hoping with a little more room, she wont be as hot, but who knows.
I'm going to try and hold out a bit longer with the infant seat (at least till the end of the month)

I did. DS is on the smaller side and always has been. He was 16 lbs at 1 yr old so it was no problem And I was still carrying him around in it if he was asleep.
I know a lot of people that have used it until 1 yr and were at the weight limit.

Re: Some infant carrier advice...
While I have to definitely agree from a BTDT mom about carrying a heavy child. Let me throw out another opinion. I have 2 DD's and used the regular snugride for DD#1 and the Snugride 32 for DD#2. DD#1 was 9lbs 4 ozs and DD#2 was 9lbs 5 ozs at birth. However DD was only 20lbs 1oz and 29 inches at 1 year. While DD#1 at 2 years is 26lbs 3 oz and was 33 inches at 18 months. I didn't switch DD#1 to the convertible seat until she was 11 months.
While I do agree that I wouldn't want to carry a 20 something lbs child in the seat - we went with the snugride 32 for a safety feature that the regular snugride doesn't offer. Side impact protection. So if you plan to have your carseat on the side (our CRV doesn't allow you to put the seat in the center) you might want to consider this seat anyway. For us - we have no intention of carrying a 32 inch 20 something pound child - so I am still going to switch DD#2 at the same time I switched DD#1 or when I get tired of carrying that weight. So you still might want to go with the bigger seat but with the understanding that you might need to leave it in your car if you don't want to carry it or be willing to switch to a convertible when you are sick of carrying it. I do have to say that there is NOTHING like being able to carry your DC into the house when they fall asleep (heavy or not) rather than trying to unbuckle them, get them out of a rear facing convertible and carry them inside without waking them up.

Thank you for the advice!
I did register for the snugride32 but more for the safely features & to be able to use it longer (hopefully).
I don't see myself carrying baby + car seat for very long. They just seem soo heavy.

Re: Some infant carrier advice...
Thank you for the advice Jen I knew there was now way for me to get the Snugride 32 when I carried it without a baby & it was heavy. Even though I don't plan on carrying my child in the infant carrier when he gets bigger, I needed the option of a lighter infant seat to begin with (I have back issues).

Right.. the snugride 32 is 9.7lbs without the baby so you figure add ten pounds to whatever the baby weighs.
The regular snugride is 7.5lbs and you wouldnt think it, but 2.2lbs makes a huge difference.
I'm not saying it is a bad idea to get the 32lb one AT ALL. I just didn't realize how much of a hassle those things are once they get a bit heavier and you really dont know until you have to whip it in and out of the car a million times a day how much you have to carry it.

I love this thread! It's so honest and true. My DS and my boss' DS are exactly 1 year apart with my son being 2 and his 1, they are 30 and 28 pounds respectively. Every kid is different, so you'll never know in advance if your kid will be bigger or not.
