Some random questions - please come in!!
Most of you know that DH and I work awful hours and we rotate around one another to watch DS. (We have no family here) I'm looking to obtain an job with normal hours. That being said:
Are most daycares open long enough for a full-time day, plus commute?
When kids start nursery school, how can they do a few hours in school? Where do they go after that?
Once kids start a full day of school, where do they go after that? Is transportation provided?
What do you do when kids have off from school?
What else do I need to know about being a mom with normal working hours?
Also, anybody hiring?
TIA!!!!!

Re: Some random questions - please come in!!
OK--this is how I understand it but I hope that a mom of older kids can clarify!!!
Are most daycares open long enough for a full-time day, plus commute?
Yes and no. I think that most of them open between 6 and 7am but they close at 5:30 or 6. I only know closing time because early mornings do not exist for me.
When kids start nursery school, how can they do a few hours in school? Where do they go after that?
Some daycares run nursery schools, so your child may be at the same center where they were as an infant. They will get the same activities as the nursery schools that are part time but you can arrange for care for longer hours. My school district has a pre-K program that they pay for but there is a lottery to get in. I believe that I would have to pay for exteneded hours on top of that if Dylan gets in. It takes place at private schools but I guess it's like having a voucher.
Once kids start a full day of school, where do they go after that? Is transportation provided?
After school programs. I think you pay for it and I do not know if the district subsidizes. I think there is bus service. I also think it varies from one town to another. Maybe I should not "think" so much.
What do you do when kids have off from school? Have a party with them!
What else do I need to know about being a mom with normal working hours? It's nice to have a routine!
Also, anybody hiring? How about becoming a weather expert to testify in court? There is huge money in it. I think you'd also need to know how the weather affects the asphalt roads. Weird idea but I had to throw it out there.

Re: Some random questions - please come in!!
Well, when they are school age, most schools offer before/aftercare programs. The cost is minimal. I think we paid $12 a day when my son went. Most close at 6 or 6:30. Places like Tutor Time and Kindercare also do aftercare and they have a bus that will go to the child's school (depending on location).
School vacations are the hardest for working parents. Some schools will have a program run by the aftercare for major vacations (xmas, easter, winter), some have nothing. My son was in Middle Country for aftercare and they offered nothing so I brought him to work with me or stayed home. Daycare centers sometimes offer vacation care for school age kids so that's an option as well.

Re: Some random questions - please come in!!
I can only comment on the daycare question from my own searches. It's not easy to find a daycare that accomodates regular work days and a long commute. Most are open a little longer but you have to pay extra for the extra time. There are some out there and they're all different, so you just gotta keep calling around. Every daycare also has a different holiday schedule. Ours does not take holidays like Columbus day off so I don't have to worry about it. They only close Christmas Day, New Years Day, memorial Day, Labor Day, July 4 and Thanksgiving--which we have off too so it's no prob.
ETA My daycare is open fro regular hours 7am-6pm. They are open 6pm-7pm at another $15 per 15min. My old daycare had hours 7:30am-6pm, but were also open and hour before and an hour after at $15 per 15min extra.

I was also going to mention SCOPE. Our district offers it. Also the day care center I used to work for was open 6AM-7PM (6AM-7AM & 6PM-7PM was extended care).
