Some thoughts on a woman president
I think it's going to be very difficult.
if a woman is too warm, maternal and kind, she's goin to be viewed as too weak to run a nation
and if a woman is colder, tougher, etc, then she's viewed as a b*tch. (like Hilary)

it's a catch 22 that i think women will never be able to escape and it's such a shame.

Re: Some thoughts on a woman president
What I dont understand is why in this country there is so much resistance to a female leader....there are many other countries that have had female leaders and they haven't fallen apart!!
The time is now to change the way the voters think....and with that being said....I would vote for any female BUT Hillary!!

Re: Some thoughts on a woman president
I don't understand why gender is equated to competency in this country. Although I know that because it is new for us that it will be a focus, but I just don't understand why because a persona has a vagina & breasts that it automatically makes them a lesser candidate.
Sorry but the track record of the penises in office lately begs me to differ...they have done PLENTY to show their incompetence.
As for Hilary, will she win...probably not. However, she is an incredibly accomplished and educated woman, and unlike most politicians she meets with her constituents on a regular basis and does indeed bring their views to the Capitol. That is what local government is supposed to do. Not to say that mistakes were not made in her past, but as of present she is a pretty effective local representative. It is a shame that her whole life she will be only the wife of a former president in the eyes of many.

As someone who read Living History, her life is much more than the whole PenisGate thing. She's a lot more than just "Mrs. Bill Clinton". And I think she's said that...and hurt people's feeling in the process ("I'm not sitting here as some little woman standing by my man like Tammy Wynette.")
She's inspiring...intelligent...and even though I don't think she'll win, her gender shouldn't be the reason why. I don't see why a woman President is seen by many as "impossible".
Third world countries have elected women, and successfully, aren't we a "superpower"?

I seriously feel she is quite capable--I am sure she ran the country at times when her DH was president--and occupied with other things!

Actually what they should do is test women to make sure they're not pregnant or menstruating when they vote, otherwise they may be too emotional. Then again there's also PMS and hormonal changes with ovulation, so the verdict is, WOMEN SHOULD NOT VOTE

Re: Some thoughts on a woman president
I think it can be done and the first step is to have women support each other. There is no reason that woman could not do the job - and I believe that the right candidate can not only do it...but do it well. Regardless of how people may feel about Hillary - I think all women should be proud that she took this step. It's a lonely path to walk but if she succeeds..image what that means for us and our daughters. It would give me great pride to tell my daughter that she can be anything she wants...including president.

Re: Some thoughts on a woman president
here's how i see it
if history proves one thing, it's that anything can happen
in the 1950's there were segregated water fountains for caucasians and African Americans
An African American woman was arrested for not going giving up her seat to a Caucasian male.
Fifty years later, we've come a long way. But there's still a long way to go.
My point is that stereotypes can and do change, but not overnight. The perception of women is deep within our society, passed down from generation to generation. The changes will evolve over time, but I just don't feel we are there yet. It's going to take quite some time.

My only question is, the perception of women as what? You say "the perception of women is..." but I'm not sure what exactly that perception is.
I guess because I am a woman, raised by a single woman, I was always told that anything a boy could do, could be done by me. I never had any limitations growing up. Was never told "you can be almost anything"...it was always "you can be whatever you want".
I'm not understanding the perception thing that you speak of.

you're right, i should have been clearer on that
across the US there are still many traditional families where the men work and the women are home barefoot and pregnant with the kids. That perception of the man as the breadwinner is deeprooted across America.
Women are seen as weak and emotional and not rational.
Case in point - -the salary issue - men are always paid more
You'll see alot of women VP's in corp America, but very few CEOs
it's gonna take a lot to break the stereotype

Re: Some thoughts on a woman president
Thanks for clarifying.
Ah yes, there's a huge factor that the religious groups play. They have a lot of power and lobbyers, and they believe in "family values" where the woman stays home. Anything else is obscene to them. I hope that with all the recent scandals, they'll take a breather and sit it out.
The fact that women are paid less than men for the same job is appaling, but true.
Society is chauvanistic. Sadly. I wish it changes soon. I too think that I'll see a woman President in my lifetime.
I'd like to hope for that.
