Posted by CaptainCharisma424 The perception of women is deep within our society, passed down from generation to generation. The changes will evolve over time, but I just don't feel we are there yet. It's going to take quite some time.
My only question is, the perception of women as what? You say "the perception of women is..." but I'm not sure what exactly that perception is.
I guess because I am a woman, raised by a single woman, I was always told that anything a boy could do, could be done by me. I never had any limitations growing up. Was never told "you can be almost anything"...it was always "you can be whatever you want".
I'm not understanding the perception thing that you speak of.
you're right, i should have been clearer on that
across the US there are still many traditional families where the men work and the women are home barefoot and pregnant with the kids. That perception of the man as the breadwinner is deeprooted across America.
Women are seen as weak and emotional and not rational.
Case in point - -the salary issue - men are always paid more
You'll see alot of women VP's in corp America, but very few CEOs
it's gonna take a lot to break the stereotype Very well said. I think you raise a lot of valid points. As we can see from the recent elections, it does not matter what our corner of society thinks, and we do tend to forget that the majority of the country does not live like us and has a completely different perspective on life.
I do think anything is possible, and I do think it will happen in my life time. I do not think it will happen right now, although I'd be thrilled if it did, with the right candidate.
ETA: I do that that because we are in the infancy of our urban to rural migration, this is not th etime. I do think once this trend of city-educated, city-born & raised young families moving to more rural and traditional parts of our society is more prevalent, it will serve to co-mingle our ideals on a grander scale. I do believe that the country's thoughts and views, as well as attitudes will not be so different.

Your points in both posts are valid...and true. And, as you also mentioned, it takes time and slowly but surely things are changing. That's why I think that it's so important the women support each other in these efforts.
The stereotype that "a woman's place in the home" as been broken down as evidenced by the number of dual income couples. Women earn college degrees and many household cannot run without the woman working.
It may take a lot to break the stereotype but it will happen. When cannot be predicted - you're right on that - but when we look at something like this...it's WILL over when.
I think that when things like this happen - Hillary running for president or even Colin Powell - we get lost in the debate of can it or can it not happen. We forget the real message behind the action...that Hillary or Colin CAN actually get up on the ballot. They may not win now but their actions set a whole new course. For that I am proud.
I just wanted to say, Captain, you have really voiced your opinion in a positive way. And not that you need my comment on that - I just wanted to say thanks. I have a lot of respect for that.

Re: Some thoughts on a woman president
It will be a long time before a woman is accepted as a president....probably not in our lifetime...I like to think it would happen in my daughters lifetime....maybe when she is 80

I wholeheartedly agree. I think the simple fact that she is running is a huge, long overdue step in the right direction - even if she doesn't win.

Hillary's not the first woman to run and she won't be the last. I hope one is elected sooner rather than later though.
I found this site extremely interesting.
Websites were definitely not around in Kennedy's time. It's a new world.

Re: Some thoughts on a woman president
Definitely not going to be easy but I believe it will definitely happen one day--I would doubt the first time a woman runs. I honestly don't see Hillary getting elected (I am not a big fan myself) but if she gets through the primary and does get on the ticket then she will always be remembered as the first woman who ran--leaving her mark in the history books. That in and of itself will always be remembered and be an accomplishement. Sets the ground for the next woman. I completely agree that women can certainly do the job, just as well as any man can, however, I wouldn't want to see all woman unite just to vote for a woman, I'd want to believe people vote for the candidate that best supports their views. I would love to see a woman but would NEVER vote for Hillary for my own peronal reasons.

I think it's going to be very difficult.
if a woman is too warm, maternal and kind, she's goin to be viewed as too weak to run a nation
and if a woman is colder, tougher, etc, then she's viewed as a b*tch. (like Hilary)
I don't think Hillary is viewed as a b*tch because she's "cold" and "tough".

Absolutely! I agree!!! I think that we should all vote for the best candidate.
My only point with supporting women is not automatically giving them the vote but rather supporting their efforts and not believing that they can't do it. You don't have to vote for someone to support them. I think that we are saying the same thing.

Just wanted to re-state that women have run in the past. They just haven't gotten very far...

Oh I know she's not the first... but she's such a prominent female politician (being a former first lady) that it really draws attention to her candidacy and the whole idea of a woman president becoming a reality at some point.
VERY interesting website...
