Someone made purchases with my debit card - that never left my wallet!
How did this happen?
I got a call from my bank that I have savings/money market accounts at, that someone has been making purchases using my debit card. Two small purchases and then a very large one. I have a small checking account there with like $300 (I got some gift or something for opening a checking account but do all my day-to-day banking at another bank). I have NEVER used that debit card. It's in my wallet, brand new. I've never gotten statements in the mail for it. I don't touch that money - it's my future down payment for a house. I never use that bank - I don't want to be tempted to dip into my savings.
How could someone get my debit card # if it's never left my wallet? Could it be someone who works at the bank? Or did someone hack into their computers?
The funny thing is - the idiot tried to buy $4000 worth of solar panels. So, I guess all the investigator has to do is check where the solar panels are being delivered.
I feel so violated, and confused!

Ugh, Dava... that suuuuuucks!
Someone once stole my credit card number and tried to buy plane tickets to India. Luckily, my CC company called me to let me know about some unusual charges and I was able to have them removed.
So many people on here have had this happen to them (with their actual bank accounts)... I bet they could give you some good advice.

I had worked in a restaurant years ago, and one waiter got arrested, b/c he was copying down peoples credit card #s.

Re: Someone made purchases with my debit card - that never left my wallet!
that happened to me....3 purchases of $99 each at a gas station in Lousiana last year!
My card never left my wallet -- and honestly its so hard to pin point when it was. There are SOOOO many possibliites of how someone can get your debit card # and clone it. When you hand it to a server at a restaurant--sometimes scammers have a machine that duplciates the # and can produce another card -- if you purchase something online and they hack into that place's system .... are among 2 possibilities just off the top of my head.
All of our information is accessible by a computer somewhere--and people can just hack into it even with the most amazing security measures

Re: Someone made purchases with my debit card - that never left my wallet!
This just happened to me on Monday-only the person tried to make a debit out of an account of mine that has been closed for 2 years for $1300. Gave me a mini-heart attack though. Luckily the bank said none of my accounts were compromised and they have no idea who got the number.
I hope it gets cleared up for you!

Re: Someone made purchases with my debit card - that never left my wallet!
Thanks Kim. My first thought was, "hey, I bet the cops went to the airport to stake out that guy who bought those tickets to India so they could nab him!" But then - yeah, probably not. So I wonder if they can/will go after the person who bought solar panels for his house using my card.
The sad thing is - I wanted to check the account activity on the card online, but I can't because I can't remember my password and they won't give it to me without my social security #. No way do I feel comfortable giving that out online right now.
Guess I have to take my lazy self over to the nearest branch and see what's going on.

Re: Someone made purchases with my debit card - that never left my wallet!
Thanks everyone.
I'm just creeped out because literally, the first time this card has left my wallet since I put it in there was 5 minutes ago when I was on the phone with the bank. No one could have copied my # from a restaurant or store because I've never used it at one. It just makes me nervous - what if some other info of mine was compromised? I don't have to worry about my credit score from this, because it was a debit card, but I know I have one or two cc's open that I never use anymore and don't even get statements from because I've moved like 3 times since I've used them. Dumb, I know. I guess this is a wake up call.

There was a special on Dateline or 20/20 (one of those news shows) about this. usually, the item(s) bought with the stolen CC are shipped to random parts of the world, usually ghettos with no running water. The reports tried to track a few packages but kept running into dead ends.
It's such a frustrating situation. I hope everything gets cleared up.

You mean, the people that buy the stuff don't actually use it? They send it to random places in the world to... to what, exactly? How do they benefit?
I just checked my credit report and there's nothing fishy on there. Whew!

I don't really remember how it works... it was very bizzare and the story really couldn't pin down exactly what was happening, and who was doing it.

Re: Someone made purchases with my debit card - that never left my wallet!
It happened to my DH and BFF.
Turns out it was a former employee of the bank who stole the card and pin numbers.
The bank was fabulous tho, I checked the account at 9pm on a Sunday night and they helped me through the entire thing

I swear it wasn't me!
Unfortunately, numbers are easy to get, even if you never use it....

Re: Someone made purchases with my debit card - that never left my wallet!
I was at our local bagel store last week with DS and some random guy walked in and asked the clerk if he could charge something on a number but he did not have the card. The store said they would not do it thankfully. I am wondering if someone did something like that to your card. My other thought is the solar panel vendor took the card info down over the telephone and then superimposed some of the numbers.

Re: Someone made purchases with my debit card - that never left my wallet!
Credit Masters can identify a bank bin (the first 6 digits of any credit card is the bin and identifies the type of card and which bank it is tied to). Once they have a bin they try to push through card combinations for small dollar amounts on various sites.
It really sucks for the merchant that they tested on... they get charged for all of those little credit transactions!

Nope - there were 3 different fraudulent transactions. The first two were smaller, to test out the card, I think. The next one was the $4000 one.
I hadn't thought about the merchants in all this - they're the ones who end up getting hurt. At least I got the money put back in my account.

I was an assistant manager at one of the outlet stores in Riverhead and some of the girls there did this as well to buy things. They were caught and were arrested but they were minors so I am sure they got a slap on the wrist. They were immediately terminated
