Something I didn't know about Circumcision

We were talking about not having a pediatrician and it occurred to me that most new moms wouldn't be aware of this - if you don't have a mohel:

Your ob/gyn does the circumcision!

Re: Something I didn't know about Circumcision

A circumcision is considered a "surgical" procedure therefore hospitals require a surgeon to do it. Ob/gyn's are obviously surgeons (they perform c/sections) but most pediatricians aren't therefore it's your OB that does the procedure. I hadn't realize that either until I started working in a hospital.

Re: Something I didn't know about Circumcision

My OB/Gyn did my sons circumsision, I really didn't think of it as odd though. I mean, he took care of the baby the whole 9 months and all.

Re: Something I didn't know about Circumcision

When I used to work for a pediatrician about 4 years ago (who I bring my son to now) they did the circ's. When my son was born, my OB did it. Whats funny is that when I bring my son to the ped now she comments on what a "lovely" job my Dr did on it. Makes me laugh.Chat Icon

Hi girls. I'm not preggo but was lurking around on these boards. I am a doctor....pediatrician in training and WE do them. If you think it's scary having an ob/gyn do it, how about an intern?

Congrats all.

Re: Something I didn't know about Circumcision

Actually my sister told me its better to have the pediatrician do it. The Obgyn really messed up my nephews. He might have to get done again and he is 3 1/2.

Re: Something I didn't know about Circumcision

Just going to throw this out there...you do not need to circumcise your sons. It is not required medically and there is a lot of new research discussing that it is not better for them medically either.

I am not sure if you are given a choice about who does it though. I have never heard of any of my friend's being asked if they want their OB or the Ped to it.

Re: Something I didn't know about Circumcision

There is also tons of research that shows the benefits..
I think when you research it the benefits of getting it done outweigh not getting it done..

Also, was just reading.. only about 10 percent of pediatricians are qualified to perform this surgery and even with those, alot of hospitals will not allow them too..

Re: Something I didn't know about Circumcision

do they do it in the hospital or after in the ob's office? i read in baby laughs that they do it in the ob's office like a week after and that just seems strange to me.

Do you have any research you can share? I will probably agree to the circumsision since DH is Jewish, but the American Association of Pediatrics considers this an unnecessary surgery and I haven't found much supporting it for health reasons. If you have another perspective I would love to learn more.

Re: Something I didn't know about Circumcision

Circumcision really isn't difficult. No injections, no sutures.

I've seen Obs and a pediatric surgeon do them...

I thought that a lot of the previous thoughts on why circumcision was benefical have been proven otherwise. IMO it is a personal choice on whether or not to do it. Most other countries (I am talking 1st world) don't do circumcisions as routine procedure. Therefore, I find it hard to believe that it is medically necessary or the benefits are that overwhelming. If they were more countries would do it as routine procedure.

They do it in the hospital (at least my ob/gyn did).

You do need to make sure that you "roll back" the skin afterwards when you clean your Chat Icon . The skin can reattach itself: See Post

Re: Something I didn't know about Circumcision

Not that this post is a debate about circumcision - but I thought I would add my 2 cents since it has kind of been brought up.

I think it is a personal choice - but I will say - if you have ever been to a bris - or have witnessed a circumcision - Trust me, it's so much quicker than you think, and almost (dare I say) easy. The baby does not experience pain, and usually back to sleep in minutes.

I think it's harder on the mom than the baby!

thats true and my HS guy friend who was Italian had it done when he was 18. His parents didnt want him to, but he was tired of being made fun of for being different- esp. from girls. There is some American puritan history behind it, hoping that it would stop men from masturbating since it would be more sensitive (stop them? Chat Icon ) so I think its more of a social thing here. If we have a son, we will def. do it so he's like everyone else.

ETA to get back to the thread an ob/gyn did my nephew
