Song for a wake/funeral - the morbid question of the day
DH & I were having a discussion about wakes this weekend. I came back from my cousin husband's wake & mentioned to him that he had a Yankee floral arrangement & a Marine one.
He told me certain things he wants at his wake/funeral, in particular, a song.
What song would you want to play at your funeral or wake? Is there anything specific you would want there?

I told my friend (who plays the piano) that I want him to play Claire de Lune and Moonlight Sonata. He told me he would.

Re: Song for a wake/funeral - the morbid question of the day
I want music played at my funeral. I have songs in mind and DH knows about them.
One of them is I am what I am by Gloria Gaynor. I know it's a gay anthem, but I LOVE that song. Let everyone think I was a lesbo - who cares, I'll be dead.

Re: Song for a wake/funeral - the morbid question of the day
I haven't given it a ton of thought, but after choosing the songs/music for my parents' funerals, there are definitely some I have eliminated because I find them too depressing.
I also would prefer not many flowers - I'd rather the money go to a charity instead.

DH said the same thing... He told me he would haunt me if I don't play it.

Re: Song for a wake/funeral - the morbid question of the day
Although music is a HUGE part of who I am and my family (DH as well) I am not sure I would want any song to be "the one they played at so&so's funeral." I know I love the song "I'll be seeing you," and it was played at my grandfather's memorial last year. The song has a whole new meaning now & I cannot hear it without tearing up. (I know that sounds selfish, but I don't know if I'd want any song to do that to someone else...)

Re: Song for a wake/funeral - the morbid question of the day
To be honest... I don't think it has to be morbid....
When my mom passed in 2001 I played "I Hope You Dance".
It summed up my relationship with her. When I got married, I had them play it..My husband, my Brides Maids (who knew my mom since they were kids) and my Mom's best Friends came on the dance floor and we all hugged each other and danced.
My mom's BF always tell me that she's always with them b/c to this day they still hear this song on the radio...and it is usually when they are having a bad day!
When my time comes, I would also like that song played at my wake.

Re: Song for a wake/funeral - the morbid question of the day
I would love them to play Duran Duran greatest hits during the wake!
At the funeral it would have to be: The Dance by Garth Brooks
Looking back on the memory of The dance we shared 'neath the stars above For a moment all the world was right How could I have known that you'd ever say goodbye
And now I'm glad I didn't know The way it all would end, the way it all would go Our lives are better left to chance I could have missed the pain But I'd have had to miss the dance
Holding you, I held everything For a moment wasn't I a king But if I'd only known how the king would fall Hey who's to say? you know I might have changed it all
And now I'm glad I didn't know The way it all would end the way it all would go Our lives are better left to chance I could have missed the pain But I'd have had to miss the dance
Yes my life, it's better left to chance I could have missed the pain But I'd have had to miss the dance

Re: Song for a wake/funeral - the morbid question of the day
My FIl played Breakaway by Kelly Clarkson at my MIL's wake.
Her symbol/ strength came from butterflies while she was battling cancer. The song reminded him of her flying with the butterflies. Especially these 2 parts:
I'll spread my wings and I'll learn how to fly I'll do what it takes til' I touch the sky And I'll make a wish Take a chance Make a change And breakaway Out of the darkness and into the sun But I won't forget all the ones that I love I'll take a risk Take a chance Make a change And breakaway
I'll spread my wings And I'll learn how to fly Though it's not easy to tell you goodbye I gotta take a risk Take a chance Make a change And breakaway Out of the darkness and into the sun But I won't forget the place I come from I gotta take a risk Take a chance Make a change And breakaway, breakaway, breakaway

Re: Song for a wake/funeral - the morbid question of the day
I have a few:
"Only Grace" by Matthew West: There is no guilt here There is no shame No pointing fingers There is no blame What happened yesterday…has disappeared The dirt has washed away And now it's clear
There's only grace There's only love There's only mercy and believe me it's enough Your sins are gone Without a trace And there's nothing left now There's only grace
You're starting over now Under the sun You're stepping forward now A new life has begun Your new life has begun
An’ there's only grace There's only love There's only mercy and believe me…it's enough Your sins are gone Without a trace And there's nothing left now There's only grace…
And if you should fall again Get back up, get back up Reach out and take my hand Get back up, get back up Get back up again Ohh…get…back…up…again…
There's only grace… There's only love… There's only mercy and believe me it's enough…it’s enough Your sins are gone Without a trace And there's nothing left now There's only…there’s only…grace…
There's only mercy and believe me it's enough…it’s enough Your sins are gone Without a trace And there's nothing left now There’s only…grace…… So get back up…get back up again… Get back up again.
Angel by Sarah McLachlan:
Spend all your time waiting for that second chance for a break that would make it okay there's always one reason to feel not good enough and it's hard at the end of the day I need some distraction oh beautiful release memory seeps from my veins let me be empty and weightless and maybe I'll find some peace tonight
in the arms of an angel fly away from here from this dark cold hotel room and the endlessness that you fear you are pulled from the wreckage of your silent reverie you're in the arms of the angel may you find some comfort there
so tired of the straight line and everywhere you turn there's vultures and thieves at your back and the storm keeps on twisting you keep on building the lie that you make up for all that you lack it don't make no difference escaping one last time it's easier to believe in this sweet madness oh this glorious sadness that brings me to my knees
in the arms of an angel fly away from here from this dark cold hotel room and the endlessness that you fear you are pulled from the wreckage of your silent reverie you're in the arms of the angel may you find some comfort there you're in the arms of the angel may you find some comfort here

Re: Song for a wake/funeral - the morbid question of the day
I don't think I would request specific songs. Maybe if my family would choose the songs themselves that remind them of me. That would be nice.

Re: Song for a wake/funeral - the morbid question of the day
At my cousin's funeral in 99 they played the soundtrack to City of Angels...most of the songs still get to me. And Angel by Sarah McLachlan...always brings tears to my eyes.

I wouldnt request anything specific.
At my uncles wake in 99, they played Stairway to Heaven (he loved Led Zep) I never cried so hard - now I cant even listen to that song.

Re: Song for a wake/funeral - the morbid question of the day
I want them to play "Bittersweet Symphony"... I walked down the aisle to that when I got married and that's all people think about when they hear that song (in a good way ) so that's what I'd want at my wake or funeral
