SOOOO MAD GD RELATED--A little long

So, I was diagnosed again with GD, I have come to terms with it and did what I had to do. Well, the Dr. said that they didnt like my numbers in the morning so they wanted to put me on medication! I didnt believe it and thought something was off, but went along anyway, they are the dr's right...
WELL, I forgot my blood tester at work yesterday and had to use my fathers, I was amazed at the awsome # that I got with it. Now mind you that I got these lower numbers with my first pregnancy therefore I didnt need medicine last time. They told me that as you get older, it can get harder, again, I believed them! So I have had to make so many appointments with the specialist and a dietician and so on...I feel like I am always in someone's office!
Anyway, back to my story. I came into work today and as a hunch I took my blood with BOTH test kits...My fathers, who's machine is new tested me at 87, then I took a test with my machine and it came back at 101!!! A 14 pt. difference!!! They put me on meds because my blood was in the 90's to low 100's in the morning and they wanted it in the 80's...MY TEST KIT HAS BEEN WRONG THE WHOLE TIME!!!
I have an appointment with my OBGYN this afternoon, wait until I tell her this one! This whole GD thing really takes the joy out of pregnancy!!!
Ladies, always go with your instincts!!!Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Yikes.. are you sure though it's your monitor that's not working? Can you have them give you another one?

I would just want to be 100% sure. I'm also on meds to control my morning blood sugar numbers.

they showed me that sugar water test thing... Did you do that - test a few strips or something? If that number came up way wrong - that would be a good sign that something was wrong and NOT on your end...

Your monitor may need to be re-calibrated. Also, why do they want your sugars kept so low?? 100 is a Fine number for someone with Diabetes or GD!

Morning numbers are supposed to be between 60-95 - This is the fasting numbers, the blood you test when you get up in the morning.

After meals numbers in the 100's are fine, but not the fasting numbers.

Re: SOOOO MAD GD RELATED--A little long

They didnt want my numbers over 90 in the morning after fasting...For the rest of the day, I could be between 80-120...
And no, I never re-calibrated it, I didnt know it had to be done and they never told me.
Because my numbers were ok throughout the rest of the day, 110-120, I felt that it was ok, I did see that it was higher #'s this time (With my daughter, my numbers were usually 90's - low 100's).

Oh I didn't see that she said it was her fasting number, I assumed when she said morning that it was after breakfast....

Glucometers are suppose to be calibrated EVERY SINGLE DAY!! A lot of people don't know that. If your machine is old it probably needs to be recalibrated!

I think some times Health care practitioners forget to tell patients stuff like this because they are so use to it that they don't think of it.....Or else they are just STUPID Chat Icon

Re: SOOOO MAD GD RELATED--A little long

definitely go to the pharmacy & have your meter recalibrated. the directions should tell you how to do it. your OB seems to be very strict about your numbers. I'm often between 120 and 130 two hours after meals and always between 90 and 100 fasting and I'm not on medication. First pregnancy I was so much higher and on insulin.

Good luck!

All machines are different but they all need to be calibrated...... You should have gotten directions with your glucometer on how to calibrate it.

Re: SOOOO MAD GD RELATED--A little long

As a type 1 diabetic who has been diabetic for almost 25 years, I am a little confused as to why she would have to calibrate a glucose machine every day. I have about 5 different machines and the only reason I would have to change anything on my machine is if the code on my strips has changed from what is programmed in the machine. Your machine might be too old. You can get newer ones for free - ask your doctor. As far as the fasting blood sugars in the morning, the doctors always wanted mine in the 80s to 90s b/c that would give them a good indication of how the sugars were during the night and also would be a good base to start the day off with. It is much easier to start the day off with a stable blood sugar rather than having to work part of the day trying to bring it down.

Re: SOOOO MAD GD RELATED--A little long

UUUGGGG, I am just soooo mad. I should have went with my gut when they wanted me on meds! I just didnt buy it, but I went on them anyway. And I had to make soooo many appointments with them for this...It really took the joy out of pregnancy! And now they are saying well your numbers were in the normal range for the rest of the day, so you probably still needed the meds...
I mean yes, its only off by 14 pts and for the rest of the day I am still in the normal range, but those 14 pts still put me on meds. the same meds that I had a reaction to one night and my sugar dropped too low and I almost passed out...

I worked in a hospital and when we were inserviced on all the different glucometers we were always taught byt the companies selling the glucometers that for accurate readings you are suppose to calibrate them every day. They are sensitive machines and can be thrown off quite easily.....

Even if you don't do it everyday and just once a week that is fine but they really need to be checked....

If you start getting high or low readings that you wouldn't normally expect your first reaction should be to calibrate the machine and re-check and they evaluate the numbers.

Re: SOOOO MAD GD RELATED--A little long

What meds to they have you on?

My blood sugar levels are perfect during the day, it's my morning (fasting numbers) that were always too high no matter what I ate as a snack prior to bed. I'm on a very low dose of Glyubide(sp?) and it's working like a charm and I've had no adverse affects to it at all.

The GD nurse I'm dealing with at the Perintologist doesn't want my fasting number to be over 90 and they don't now with the meds.

IMO, it's really no big deal to take a 1/2 pill at night before bed with my snack.

Yes I do understand about the numbers being in the 80 for the morning, but I was usually is the upper 90's to low 100's. If the machine was right, then I would be in the 80's and I wouldnt need the meds. I am just really mad about that part. I didnt listen to my gut feeling that something didnt seem right...
