Re: Sort of spinoff of the education poll-
i don't think much of it in the sense that i am pretty open-minded and try not to judge maybe they had health issues, or a relative did, or maybe something else happened, etc
i don't even care if someone has no degree at all - as long as they are happy now and are doing something productive - whatever it may be
the present is what matters

Re: Sort of spinoff of the education poll-
I have a GED and not a HS diploma.
Mainly because I did not go to school here. Did not feel like spending $$$ on document translation of my education overseas. I pay $7.50 for the fee. Went to a couple of free classes with my local communicaty college. Took the test. They told me to go take the tests direcly. It had 5 modules at the time. For me it was worth it. I did not want to go back in the field I was in. So all I need is a GED if I wanted to go back to school. I eventually went back to school years later. Just used the GED I had and that was it.
Having gone to a few classes, I saw the people who go there. I command ANYONE who wants to further their education. It takes time and dedication to go back to school because you did not finish HS. I think the GED is more valuable in my eyes. I see people who are commited to better themselves whatever the reason they don't have a HS diploma.

i never thought of that situation-- about coming here after getting an education somewhere else...but that's great!

Re: Sort of spinoff of the education poll-
I don't think GED is a big deal versus regular diploma.
When I was in high school I might have thought less of that person but that's because everyone makes you think the regent's diploma is so damn important
Has anyone ever been asked to prove the graduated high school?

Yes.
My DH has his GED and he is very embarrassed by it, and yes, he has had to provide copies of it for his job and when he was in the Army.

Re: Sort of spinoff of the education poll-
i don't really think about it you never know the reasons why someone has their ged as opposed to the regular diploma, maybe they had their problems, issues, no desire while in hs but then realized they wanted or needed that degree
as i stated in the other post my dad has a ged and only so he could get into the marines and my dh doesn't have either, yet he is a very successful business owner, i think it is important to have one or the other but by no means has a bearing on how smart a person is so unless i know the story i don't really think about it

He was in the Army - that's a great accomplishment & I'm sorry he feels embarrassed by it (the GED)...but not everyone gets the military experience and that is surely something to be proud of. I could never do it and I know my brother couldn't, either.

Thanks
I am genuinely curious how people feel about it, I don't think that it is embarrassing. He wouldn't tell my parents for YEARS b/c my mom was a teacher and my father was a NYS Regent, so education is a hot topic. And I knew they didn't or wouldn't care in the least...

Honestly, I wouldn't care either way. If anything, I would think the person with the GED "wanted" it more, KWIM? Tell CHris to get over it already

Re: Sort of spinoff of the education poll-
That they were a derelict in HS.
That is the FIRST thing that comes to mind if I hear that.
If I'm face-to-face with someone and they're telling me that about themselves - I will probably form a diff opinion.
eta (because DUH, this is LIF): I DO realize that not all people who have their GEDs are this way. Honest opinion - that is the first thing that comes to mind. If I know nothing else about the person.

Re: Sort of spinoff of the education poll-
I also wanted to add that I can't think of the last time I was invloved in a conversation regarding a diploma vs. a GED. So it's really a non-issue for me b/c I've rarely been in a discussion about it....
I feel badly now that I'm probably adding to someone's embarrassment if they have a GED.
I guess I should train myself to think "maybe they were training for the Olympics throughout their HS career and was never able to get their diploma..."

Re: Sort of spinoff of the education poll-
I used to teach adults in a GED program. There was a pretty wide range of people- some were new to the US, some just got derailed, some had to attend as a condition of parole (the first two groups were pretty motivated, generally, the last group, not so much.)

I would think that something went on with them personally that caused them not to finish high school the typical way.

Re: Sort of spinoff of the education poll-
In my line of work I have seen so many reasons people get a GED instead of a HS diploma to name a few: new to the country the US does not honor their HS diploma OR college degree sometimes, was pregnant in HS, dropped out to help support their family, family had health issues needed to drop out, at a young age decided to drop out went back later in life, dropped out went back by court mandate/parole...
These are a few common reasons.
I think good for them that they had the drive to go get it when they could have thrown in the towel.

Re: Sort of spinoff of the education poll-
I think good for them that they took the time to get their GED. Most people I know who have done so had a rough time in life. Once you are out of school it is so easy to just give up on education. I commend anyone who has a desire to further their knowledge.

Re: Sort of spinoff of the education poll-
I think they had issues in school with graduating on time, but went back to get their diploma (which is considered admirable).
I have to admit I do wonder what the issues were - whether they were social issues, truancy issues, etc.

This is what I think too.
My sister dropped out of hs 3 months before graduating. She would have been salutatorian - but desperately wanted to get married the second she turned 18.
She went back and got her GED after their 2nd kid (14 years later!) - then continued her education. She was one of the smartest people I knew.

Re: Sort of spinoff of the education poll-
I can't be one to judge since I don't have either ! I had a really tough childhood, and moved out when I was 16 and had to work full time . I took classes 2 yrs ago ,but because I have been having a really tough time the last few yrs ( medical issues) I haven't taken the test yet,but I am going to do so this yr ,and go to school to be an EKG tech.!
