Has anyone had persistent (somewhat intermittent) shoulder pain from either sleeping on your side and/or leaning on one specific arm as you do things such as watch TV on the couch?

I have been having pain in my right shoulder for a few months that I think is attributable to how I sit on the couch at night and how I sleep. I have full range of motion but my shoulder feels achy and uncomfortable at times, it can last a few days or come and go.

If you have similar issues, how did you treat it? Did your shoulder get better? I have a appt with an ortho on Tuesday but I was just curious if this was a common thing or not. Thanks! Chat Icon

I started getting pain in my shoulder during Covid. I noticed when I was having a catch with my son, I could not throw the ball overhand.
I went to the doctor for a checkup months later, and told her. I got an X-ray, and it revealed arthritis in my neck and spasm in my shoulder. I went to physical therapy, and it didnt help. Then I got an MRI, which revealed the same thing, plus bulging discs in my neck. but my neck is a little crooked (I know he used a different term)
I got an injection in my shoulder and feel good, back to kickboxing and just set my limit.
I know it is long, but not sure if it had anything to do with sleeping on my side.
It cant hurt to check it out. I just thought I was getting old.

For various aches and pains I
I've had ( shoulder/neck, feet, hip), I've had a lot of improvement by following stetches from Bob & Brad on you tube. They are physical therapists.

Just look up Bob & Brad shoulder or Bob & Brad neck, etc. They have a lot of videos.

One thing I recently learned with my hip though, is that stretching helps, but I also need to strengthen.

ETA- yes, how you sit or work can definitely cause aches and pains.

that's how my frozen shoulder started.

i learned the hard way to keep it in motion. stretch and mobility exercises are the best. even if your issue is no where near as serious as frozen shoulder, just keep things moving.

i'm going to check some of the exercise videos suggested above.

I had the worst pain a few months ago and I noticed it stopped shortly after I stopped sleeping with my arm undermy pillow/head.

When my mom was sick, I could only sleep on the couch incase the phone rang and I had to get up. So I was laying on my right side to face the tv.

It felt like my bone was bruised and would just hurt. But didn't hurt when i touched it. It just was a constant ache.

I have noticed it went away. I am not sure because I am back on my bed and not sleeping on it. But I did have it for months.

Do you think it's possible that it is related to the vaccine shot? I only ask because a friend of mine is having shoulder/arm issues since getting the shot related to misplacement of where the needle was put into his arm. It can happen with any shot, it's not related to the Covid vaccine in particular.

No, this is my right arm that I am having issues with (I had both shots in my left) and it's actually been going on for a few months. The discomfort in my right shoulder has been coming and going since sometime last year, it's becoming a little more frequent now which is why I want to have it looked at.

As an aside, I did have soreness in my left arm after the 1st vaccine shot but that went away after about 3 days. So far, so good after the second shot. Chat Icon

My husband felt like this and swore he needed to have surgery (yes, men are more dramatic lol) and it turned out to be arthritis. He uses his shoulders a lot at work so he hurts at times.

We bought a new mattress, a Tempurpedic with the adjustable frame. My shoulder pain disappeared immediately.

If it is persistent for months, I would say it is a bigger issue than sleeping on that side.

I lift weights and sometimes run into sore shoulders, where I am convinced I tore something. It is usually achy for a 5-7 days, but clear up as long as I rest it.

Have you tried icing it or any shoulder rehab exercises? My DH has a crumby shoulder due to a fall 15+ years ago. Every so often he tweaks it and needs to ice, rest, and medicate to reduce inflammation for a few weeks.
