sorta spinoff...do you wait for your ped to start new things?
I didn't.
I started Luce on solids on Sunday b/c he's been so interested in what we are eating...I figured it was time.
he gobbled it up big time...LOVED it (I will eventually post pics of the beast in action )
it just never occured to me to ask the ped..but now I am a little
is there a way they can tell better than we can that they are ready...or more importantly NOT ready?
I've noticed he's been babbling a lot less since starting him Sunday, and he's been sleeping more and I am hoping I didn't do anything wrong.
so, I guess there is another question here...once you started solids (ped approved or not) did you notice any changes in behavior?
TIA.

We didn't. And my kid doesn't shut up
I don't think there is any correlation between behavior changes and starting solids, so don't worry about that

Re: sorta spinoff...do you wait for your ped to start new things?
Well about a week ago my mom decided to put sweet potato in my dd's mouth-to which I went crazy and had her wiping it out of her mouth because I was waiting for the ped to tell me, lol. But I went to the ped yesterday for dd's 4 month visit and the ped asked me if I already started-so I guess I didn't have to wait for them to tell me...I will start this week so I don't really know if she will change after.

Re: sorta spinoff...do you wait for your ped to start new things?
With food I did, but both DH and I have food allergies so I was really anxious about starting the kids on solids. With DD I waited until she was about 6 months old (I think - it's getting fuzzy) and with DS we waited until we had his formula issues resolved before starting solids.

I do for some things only b/c DS has a texture issue so since she has experience with other children who also have this she gives me advise when to try things next.

Well, I wait on things even though ped suggests it and the only thing I noticed when I started solids with DD at 6 months was she started to STTN

With Jack, I really went by what my ped said - but I also trust him opinion. He is a close friend of the family and I truly had no clue.
This time around, he won't push anything on me - and now that I know what I'm talking about (or think I know) he listens to what I have to say, and we discuss it. I have delayed shots and he doesn't fight me on it. I think being a second time mom I know trust my instincts more.

Re: sorta spinoff...do you wait for your ped to start new things?
I'm waiting for the ped. but anxiously awaiting to start him on cereal just so I could see his face
I should've asked at his 2 month when he was going to tell me to start cereal and solids. I just assumed 4 months cereal/6 months solids but I could be totally wrong.

Re: sorta spinoff...do you wait for your ped to start new things?
Some things yes, some things no.
I doubt that giving Luce food is the cause of his babbling less. The food thing is more about future (possible) health issues. But if he was ready, then he was ready. I didn't want to feed DD solids until 6 months. SHE wanted food way before then, so she got her way.
DD was really sick just last week - she had her first ER visit and everything. I called the doctor before we went to the hospital and he asked me what did I want to do - which struck me as odd because she had 105.6 temp - what would anyone do?? When I saw the doctor again on Saturday, he said he asked me that because he trusts a mother's instinct above all, because moms know their children better than anyone else.
I think with that said, you can rest assured that if you feel Luce is ready for solids then he probably is and you don't need someone with a degree to tell you that.

Re: sorta spinoff...do you wait for your ped to start new things?
We didn't wait. We started her on solid foods about a week before she turned 4 months. She was sooooo interested in what we were eating and she gobbled up her cereal like there was no end.
I did not notice an behavioral differences once we started the solid foods. She def did not sleep any better either.
My ped isn't too strict though. They told us not to try PB until 2 and when we just went in for her 2yr well visit the doctor asked if we tried PB yet. I said we did and she didn't have a problem at all that we tried it at 18 months.

Re: sorta spinoff...do you wait for your ped to start new things?
thanks everyone.
he's also had a pretty exciting weekend besides his first meal...he went on his first LIRR train ride to a kids party with tons of people he didn't know Saturday, a dinner party on Sunday, and my niece was BIL were over yesterday keeping him company.
maybe he just needs to synthesize these last few days before he's back to "normal".
I cannot express how freaked out I will feel if he doesn't start talking again soon though.

Here's the thing about babies...a lot of times when they do something or start something new they stop doing something else for a little bit, so don't let it freak you out

Re: sorta spinoff...do you wait for your ped to start new things?
DS had his 4 month checkup last week and i asked if i should put him on solids. he said to wait because he sleeps so good now. (he sleeps 11 hours). i figured he's right and why screw with it. he goes back for his 5 months check up so we'll re-evaluate then.

Two things: When it comes to feeding, I kind of wait to see what my ped says. We got the ok to start about 4 weeks ago but i didn't bc I didn't want to start him so early but he's eating non-stop now so I've accepted the fact that we have to begin.
The babbling - my DS stopped babbling for 10 DAYS at 3 months, right after the Prevnar vaccine and I was freaking out! I posted and lots of people told me not to worry and mentioned that sometimes they stop doing one thing when they are working on mastering something new. This is exactly what happened. Turns out Joshua was working on learning to purposely grab things, not just swat. Once he was grabbing things, the babbling quickly returned. I notice that the babbling changes a lot. He used to babble all day and now he's more selective although he babbles when he wakes up in the am and 2 nights ago, I even heard him babbling in his sleep!

Re: sorta spinoff...do you wait for your ped to start new things?
We listen to our PED and take recommendations, but ultimately do what *we* feel is best. DD will be 5 months next week and we are going to start her on cereal. We waited, even though the PED said we could start her 4 months.
Also, DD was CONSTANTLY talking, babbling, razz, etc. before 4 months. At 4 months it's almost like she was over those sounds she was making. Now, she has new sounds and when she's in a talkative mood- still talks, squeals, tons. But, there were a few weeks when it was less than before. Maybe it's like how they "get over" certain things when they find other things more interesting. IE: DD used to go crazy for her hands. Now, it's her feet. I'm sure your DS is just discovering new things and I am sure it has NOTHING to do with starting solids

Re: sorta spinoff...do you wait for your ped to start new things?
I never did with anything really-except OTC meds. For instance-I read online that Maaloxx could help comfort kids with reflux. I called my Dr asked what he thought and got dosing info. I did my own research and talked to friends/family on most other things. Food? NEVER, but that is because I am pretty confident with feeding them.
