sorta spinoff...how far (timewise, so I guess how long) would you travel to do to a baby shower?
besides for immediate family?

ditto. 2 weeks ago i traveled an hour 15 for a shower - but as she's my bff's sister in law...i did it.
i am someone though who driving is not a big deal. dave & I drive a LOT so an hour to us is NOTHING....

It depends on who it is for and where I have to travel.
ITA - it also depends on the day of the week. If it's a Saturday, I'd be inclined to travel further than if it's a Sunday and I know I have to go to work the next day.
ETA - last summer we drove 2 1/2 hours to a 30th birthday party for my cousin because his family always comes to our parties.

Here's the deal IMO...
I have NEVER decided to go to something - bridal shower/baby shower/wedding based on how long the drive is.
I had this argument with my sister recently. I have never responded to an invite based on the distance from my house. Maybe I am unusual, but if it's someone I care about - I go wherever the event is held.
I might check with family members or friends to see if they want to drive together, but I've driven to CT and/or Albany for events.
Really, in the grand scheme of things, it would just be a long day and maybe you would leave a little early to go home....

this is how *I* think...but people have sorta hinted to me that traveling to my weekend house is "too far" for most people. 
I especially don't want to alienate my MIL's friends and the people dh grew up with. they are "city" people and balked at my wedding at the Westbury Manor (they all went, but no one could figure out why we didn't just have it in Brooklyn.)

Me, I've crossed many state lines and taken vacation time to get to the showers of friends and family.
I think as long as it is a day trip (i.e. they can drive to the shower, attend the shower, and get home in the same day), then it shouldn't matter how far away it is unless their are mitigating circumstances.

I drove to Delaware for a friends shower (about 4.5 hours) and back (total 9 hours) in the same day!

I agree with this (even though I voted an hour  but that was for people I am not close to.)
I am not a fan of showers in general, they just aren't my idea of a great time. But, I know that it is important to the person who is having it that I be there, if they are someone close to me, so I suck it up and go, wherever it is. I grew up in a family that would drive 2 hours each way for a holiday dinner with extended family, though, and I don't think a lot of people do that.
I will say that it meant a great deal to me that my aunt came down from Massachusetts (and took the train home) and my cousin drove up from Baltimore for my baby shower. It really made me feel loved, especially since my mom is no longer here to share these events with me.
And, for what it's worth, I think showers at someone's home are really nice. I think you get to mingle and visit more with people other than the two or three you are sitting next to at a restaurant. You can also linger longer and don't feel rushed to get out.

It doesn't really matter to me, I wouldn't base my decision on whether or not I go based on how far it is to travel.
If the person is important to me, then I will be there, unless I have other obligations.

Crashing to answer this because DH and I just booked plane tix yesterday to attend an out of state baby shower.
BUT:
1. it's a co-ed shower that we will both be attending (and they are his friends, so I wouldn't have gone alone in this case)
2. it's a good excuse to visit a place we've never been to before. We're planning on staying 3 days and making a long weekend getaway out of it.
3. we are notorious for being the ones who will suck it up and travel to events - we have shown up for many a wedding, shower, baptism, birthday celebration that was VERY out of the way, because we love the people involved and want to celebrate with them.
I've run across my fair share of people who think like the "city people" you mentioned above. And because of item #3, it hurts me that much more when people won't travel for us. I understand that it would be nicer for them if it was more convenient for them - and if a whole lot of people are coming from one area, and you CAN have the shower there just as easily, you may want to consider it - but in the end, it's not about THEM, it's about YOU.

It depends, usually i would travel up to about an hour for my friends or family's baby shower.
But i have been known to miss a few baby showers in the past 2 years due to travleing with my job. If i'm home and not traveling usually it doesn't matter how far i have to drive, but while i was traveling on business I couldn't find the 5 hours it would have taken me to drive home for the shower and on another occassion that 5 hours i would have spent in the airport or on the plane just for a baby shower. And one was for a shower that BTW i threw for my best friend and the other one was for my close family.

An hour. I was just invited to a Bridal Shower that is an hour away in May but pregnant or not I might not go...because of the person.
If it were someone that I likes then I'd be there no problem.
