South Dakota restricting abortions
Bill Outlawing Nearly All Abortions Passes in South Dakota http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/022306J.shtml South Dakota lawmakers yesterday approved the nation's most far-reaching ban on abortion, setting the stage for new legal challenges that its supporters say they hope lead to an overturning of Roe v. Wade. The bill makes no exceptions for rape, incest or the health of the woman.

Re: South Dakota restricting abortions
Since this bill violates a Supreme court ruling, it will probably be overturned.

Wow. That is scary.
I am sure I will get flamed for this, but what the hell: does it seem like other states in the US are just backward? And stuck in another era?
Not saying we don't have our share of stupidity in the Northeast, but it makes me wonder.

BEWARE ... I believe this will be the case that is going to bring the big debate back to the Supreme Court for a ruling .... This is going to be the Roe v Wade of 2006

Re: South Dakota restricting abortions
The Supreme Court already agreed to hear the case challenging the constitutionality of the law banning late-term abortions. The constitutionality of this SD law will surely be challenged next.

Re: South Dakota restricting abortions
here is my take
i hope this comes out right
i am strongly pro-life. But, i understand why some women feel the need to have them and i don't judge based on that.
But, I feel there is too much time devoted to abortion and not enough time devoted to adoption education. I mean, if you don't want the kid, fine, but why abortion? I wish adoption could be up on that level as another solid option and that abortion wasn't seen as the only alternative.
Heck, I wish men and women made more sensible choices before jumping in the sack. But, I am realistic, I realize that even if you ban abortion, it's not going to end. And I would rather a young girl, if she REALLY felt she needed the abortion, go to a reputable clinic, rather than go to a back alley with a coat hanger, or worse yet, have the kid and leave it to die in the dumpster.
I guess what I am saying is, don't ban abortion outright, but strongly promote adoption so that abortion isn;t the only answer

I don't think you will get flamed, you are entitled to your opinion, and there is nothing wrong with that!
I totally understand your point and agree with you. DH had a close friend who got pregnant and didn't know what to do. She actually approached several different pro-life people/organizations and received little to no assistance or advice. It was terrible. People were so caught up in pro-choice or pro-life, and yet, no one could offer her real life help (instead of propoganda) in what to do if she was unsure.
Abortion has always made me uncomfortable becasue I am against the death penalty and see it as a bit hypocritical to be pro choice. Basically, I think abortion needs to remain legal because of its broader implications.

I understand your point. Whether you are pro-life or pro-choice, though, one can't deny someone the right to make their own decisions. I think people (especially teens) should be more educated. Abortion should not, in any way, be a form of birth control, which IMO has happened. They should promote birth control, or better yet, abstinence.
Edited for bad spelling.

I think what really, really troubles me is the part about victims of rape, incest, and the lack of concern for the health of the mother.

Re: South Dakota restricting abortions
This upsets me so greatly that I cannot even begin to comment. It is MY body. MINE. If I want to have an abortion, that is MY choice. It's not someone else's, and unless they are going to pay my medical bills during an unwanted pregnancy, then come and set up an adoption, then they better not even begin to think about changing the abortion laws. Where are all the pro-lifers when the girls with unwanted pregnancies are trying to feed, clothe and care for those children? WHERE? They're certainly not opening their homes to those babies, are they? They're not there handing money over to help out with medical bills, are they? When they are ready to do that, then they can change the laws. And I'm PREGNANT. Let me tell you, this is not something that I could do on my own, without insurance or someone to help me through or if I didn't want this baby at the end. It's just not. And I could give a sh-t if people don't agree with me on this or flame me, but it will be a horrifying day when the government can make decisions like this for MY body.

This is the major point the pro-choice argument comes down to. While I can definitely see why people would be concerned about the # of and reason for abortion, the real issue is that women have the right to make choices about their bodies. Once legislation is passed to limit YOUR say over YOUR body, the terrifying slippery slope has begun!

Yes. I think A LOT of thinks should be promoted. Adoption, abstinence, birth control, etc. However, I also think the right to choose what happens to your body should be promoted above all else.

I think in a perfect world we would all wish that abortion wouldn't exist and that everyone who is sexually active would wear a condom and take BC, that no accidents would exist, etc. I wish more children were sent to loving adopted families but I think for a young girl to carry a baby to term without education and parental concern is extremely difficult and significant measures have to be put into place to help those young teens.

I actually think more needs to be done to educate people, young adults and teens, about safe sex and alternatives to having sex. A while back, I did a study within a group and research shows that schools with open and candid sex education program have a significant difference in unwanted pregnancies. All in all, better education for all choices is the best defense against unwanted pregnancies and children.
