Speak up or keep your mouth shut

I'll try to keep this long story short. We move OOT in 1/09, since DH mostly worked from home he kept his NY job and become a consultant for his company billing them once a month to equal the previous salary he was getting paid. Fast forward to May of this year and his company gets bought out by a nation wide company. He "interviews" for the position and they want to hire him but first have a 90 day trial period so rather than get on their payroll he stays on as a consultant billing them once a month. Well the 90 days was up last week and they tell him there were a few issues he had that they want him to work on and so while they think he's doing a good job overall they want to extend his trial period another 90 days!Chat Icon Also with this new position comes a lot of traveling. I work weekends and sometimes his traveling requires weekends and this is where our problems arise. We have no family here so if he's traveling and I'm working then they'll be no one to take care of the kids(so far mom has come to the rescue the 2x this has happened!). We considered me dropping down to a per diem status to accomodate his schedule but then we would have no health insurance and be royally screwed. We are both very frustrated at this now 6 month trial period and who the heck knows if he'll have a job after this. And even if he does get officially hired he'll have worked there for 6 mths with no benefits and no accumulation of vacation/sick time.
So he drafted up a long email to his "bosses" politely and professionally defending himself and explaining what a sh!t hand they've dealt him to reconsider this "punishment" and explaining our situation. (He's partly worried that they are only keeping him on because they are in the middle of merging the company he used to work for with the rest of the company and thinks this is why they want to keep him around for another 3mths and then give him the ax)
So if you were in this situation do you send it or suck it up?

Ughhhhhhhh this fcukin sux big time. I wish I knew the company i'd boycott if I could. What fcuks. you guys are probably stressed to the max over this, I know I would be!!Chat Icon Chat Icon

Tough call on the email. I'd want to give them a gentle piece of my mind too, but maybe not before I had something else lined up just in case they drop the ax.

Re: Speak up or keep your mouth shut

I would send an email but it would be worded very carefully and make mention of his desire to remain with the company and request some type of assurance that his future at the company willl be secure or some type of language that conveys that sentiment.
Its better to speak now than hold it in and be a victim of the higher powers.

Something similar to me happened several years ago, I worked for a large firm and key managers decided to quit and take clients with them leaving the rest of us "underlings" to fend for ourserlves. For 3 months they held meetings assuring all employees that "everything is working smoothly, the firm is doing well and there are some bumps in this road to becoming a new entitty". All of that was baloney when 3 weeks later the Manager of the entire firm sent an email announcing the split and that office space would be cut in 1/2. I was basically told to come into work as usual but when some staff came in on Monday to see desktop computers removed along with nameplates on office doors, the writing was already on the wall - people were given severance packages that same day.

So yes, lots of Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon because this type of transition doesn't seem to bode well for him.

I would suck it up & actively look for another job.

If they offered me a position, I would take it & still look elsewhere. This is a company that doesn't treat people well.Chat Icon

ITA.

Sorry this is happening. He needs to start getting out there before the 90 days are up. There are better jobs out there. Ask family to help in the interim until he is out of there. You really have no choice since you carry the health benefits.

I wish you the best of luck.

I totally agree. Especially if you truly feel they are planning to give him the ax.

In the meantime, I would also look for alternate baby sitting options on the weekends.

Is there a drop-in day care center in your area? Maybe a few neighbors you can get to know?

Yeah he's got a few possibilities due to some good connections plus I could always work F/T so we're not too worried about it right now.
We found a college girl right now that takes care of the girls occasionally. We do like her but truth is unless it's family I'll never feel at ease leaving my girls overnight (I work the graveyard shift) with a babysitter. Chat Icon Might have to look into investing some hidden cameras!

So rather than an email DH spoke to on of them on briefly Friday and then again today about reconsidering and so we're waiting to hear..........
