Report cards are a part of your child’s educational record and CAN be used as part of the decision making process in placement decisions. I am a school psychologist. I urge you to take the markings seriously.

Thanks for your response, I’m just confused - why do you mean by take it seriously? Bring it up to principal? Or accept it? Sorry, thanks!!!

Also what kind of recourse do I have? Do principals ever “side” with the parents in these things? Do I have a shot of getting her to adjust his grade?

Yes, report card grades can be adjusted. I would ask for a meeting with either the special education chair or the principal.

At CSE meetings, all documents can be looked at the review whether a child is progressing in their current placement, or even a year or two down the road. If there’s question about how he is doing in ICT, report cards from the past several years would be referenced as part of the data, and the 2 would be “evidence” that ICT may not be meeting his needs (or too restrictive). This is why it is important that the report card tell the whole truth as to whether he is truly meeting grade level standards or not. Of course, teacher feedback, standardized testing also lends to those decisions as well, but report cards are a part of it. And you never know when unforeseen circumstances would force you to move to another district. The report cards are the first things analyzed by a receiving district.

I don’t have a child in special ed, but I will give my opinion in that I do think some teachers start kids off with a 2 or 3 on first report card to show “growth” when they end with a 4 by the last report card.

Yes, teachers do this all the time. And obviously I’m in the minority but I don’t make a big deal about it. I don’t show my kids their report cards at this age, and it’s first grade.

Unless of course it’s going to potentially affect your child’s ability to be moved into a mainstream class.

I teach in an ICT class in NYC. My students with IEPS are not graded based on the standards per se. They are graded on THEIR personal goals based on their IEP. So just because a student may score a 100% on a test, he/she may not have mastered their own personal goal for the marking period, warranting a lower grade.

You need to sit down with the general ed teacher as well as the special ed teacher and go over the report card. Ask them to explain to you where the grades came from .

Are the children in your class with EIP taking the same tests as the gen ed students?
