Speech Delay Question

DD#1 will be 22 months on Friday. I am wondering if I should seek to have her evaluated for EI services. Chat Icon Here is the scenario:

Reilly seems to be very verbal, but in a language I do not understand! I actually joke around and call her "Morimoto" because to me, it sounds like she is speaking Japanese! Chat Icon She says a few words clear enough that an outsider could understand her, and I know she understands us (I ask her to point out things in books or put certain animals in puzzles and she does it fine) but the speaking a different language is making me wonder. Is this something I should be worried about and seek an evaluation for? Anyone willing to share some insight would be greatly appreciated. Chat Icon

Re: Speech Delay Question

Do a search of even flip a few pages back, there has been a lot of discussion on this the past day or so. I replied on another about a similar thing. EI won't evaluate for specifically for articulation, you need to go through CPSE but they will not evaluate until 2 1/2 yr old. But honestly I can't see it hurting to get things going now. Sometimes there is an issue you are not aware which changes services entirely. My DS was 4 in May and he receives PROMPT therapy. It's hard to explain what it is but if you google it (all caps) you will see what it is. If you have any questions as you go through, FM me if you want, I've been through a lot with my son's speech issues so I have some knowledge I will gladly share.

Re: Speech Delay Question

Gabi, it doesnt hurt to have her evaluated. The requirements are very different for the 18 month group (which she would be tested on NOW) then they are for 24 months. I would call to arrange for the evaluation and maybe if it is only 1 month away from her 2nd bday they would do both tests. AJ has shown a huge improvement in speech since getting EI. Gianna repeats pretty much everything he says...which is goog and bad because his articulation isnt there yet.
If she does need services it is good to get the ball rolling now though because as you know, it took me quite some time to finally get AJ approved.

Thanks Deb! I was gonna call you about this to pick your brain. Meghan didn't say a word until she turned 2 (no babbling either, she just would say, "Doot!") but it seemed like overnight, she started speaking in paragraphs so I didn't know what to think. Re: Speech Delay Question

My DS has been speaking what sounds like Japanese for months, with hand gestures, eye contact, and he wonders why I dont understand him.

He has many word approximations. I understand them, most people wouldnt.

I purposely waited to begin the eval process until he was approaching his second birthday. We've already completed a few of the steps. The actual eval is 5 days after his second birthday.

That sounds like my DD, Reilly. Thanks for sharing. I'm starting my research on what to do, now. Chat Icon

My friends daughter does PROMPT. From what I understand it is a way of having teh child feel the lips and cheeks to feel how the words sound. Based on how HelenKeller communicated(SO interesting!) This friend's daughter was denied for EI at 18 mos but she appealed it by saying she would get a parent advocate and they gave her services. 2 1/2 years later the speech teachers told her there was nothing else she could do and recommended her to a surgeon. He did surgery and she is doing GREAT.

To the OP I would try it-no one else can understand what my kids say but I do...do you undersatnd her?

She does have some words that she says clearly but no where near 40. The more I think about it, the more I realize that she points to things or if I tell her to get something, she will retrieve it, but not verbalize it for me.

She very clearly says, "Hi Zoe," and "Bye Zoe," to her sister all the time. She says 'Eerios' for Cheerios, and a bunch of other words that are pretty clear but again, not 40. Chat Icon

Many times I do understand what she is trying to say but as I think about it more, I also believe that I anticipate what she wants alot. Like I posted above to Pickles, she definitely does not have 40 words which I think is norm right around 22 months, and she points or takes things alot without having to ask for them. I hope I can get her evaluated soon. Chat Icon

My boys have a ton of words, but don't put any together and have a ton of "chinese" language. I'm not concerned at all. They know everything, and have more words every day. I wouldn't worry yet.

Re: Speech Delay Question

This was Nina. We used to call her Kai-lan because she used to (still does quite a bit) babble and it sounded like Chinese. She was the same with being able to point out things and she had a few clear words but she just wasn't "there". There is no harm in having her evaluated but I would wait till 24 months. Once they hit 24 months there is a whole new standard they look for. If she doesn't qualify now but doesn't improve, you will have to wait another 6 months.

FM me if you have any questions!

Re: Speech Delay Question

I had DD evaluated at 23 months for similar concerns...she "talked" a lot, but pretty much ALL words were ONE syllable....Dog was "doh", "cookie" was "coo"...etc... She didn't put sentences together..

They evaluated her, and determined she was fine. That if SHE had a "word" for an object, and new that "word" meant that object, that at around 2, that was all they were worried about. I was told by several in the process that they did NOT concern themselves with articulation AT ALL.

Now, a year later, I have a hard time getting DD to stop talking!!! She still has a few consonants ("s" and "L" Mainly) that she has trouble with, but the words are there, and she speaks in paragraphs (and the longest run on sentences I've ever heard!!)

But I wouldn't have done anything differently...if you are at all concerned, have her evaluated...that's why they are there!!!

I sent you an FM. I just had my 22 mos old tested and he can be described just as your DD-- he did NOT qualify. They actually thought my pediatrician was kinda silly for having him tested because he is pretty sharp.....just doesn't talk alot. Chat Icon Chat Icon Anymore questions please feel free to FM me!

Chels does the same thing for some things I know she knows the words for for instance "book and ball" she'll just point and say "this this this" or even just "eh eh eh" I say the word over and over to her to make her use it but sometimes she just doesn't...Also a lot of things I understand that she's saying, bc I'm home with her all day, but ppl that aren't around her all the time don't understand but she's clearly saying a word that isn't being enunciated correctly

Re: Speech Delay Question

IDK, we are in the exact same boat. 98% of his speech is Japanese. He only uses about 15 words although I know he knows more and has said them correctly before - just stopped saying them. He understands absolutely ever.single.thing I say to him. The only 2 word sentences he says is "Dad car" or "Bye ____(insert word here). He never shuts up, but it is all babble. He is starting to get increasingly frustrated that I don't know what he means, but I am going to wait a bit for an eval to see if he does it on his own. When I understand what he means, I say it the right way 2x or soChat Icon
