Speech Therapists?
Any exercise I can do to get Maddie to annunciate better?
She's having particular problems with the letter "R". Sometimes it seems that her tongue is going in the wrong direction when she's talking.
This is from thumbsucking isn't it?

Re: Speech Therapists?
How old is she? When my son was in speech therapy (around age 18 months), his therapist told me that R was one of the hardest sounds to say so not to worry if it was a while before he could.

Re: Speech Therapists?
She's 2-1/2. She says things like "Ohm" instead of Arm...almost like a Queens accent.

Re: Speech Therapists?
i wouldn't worry about it, my daughter is 3 and it is at times hard to understabd all of her words, my friend who is speech therapist said as long as she can ay a large vocab even if some of the words are muffled, it's fine!

Re: Speech Therapists?
i wouldn't be concerned at this stage in the game as /r/ is a late developing sound. Just model the sound appropriately and as she matures her articulation should as well. Oh and btw i am a speech pathologist

Re: Speech Therapists?
I am not sure about suggestions since I'm not a speech therapist, but I am a teacher and know that you can bring her to your school district and they HAVE to provide free testing and services even if she is not of school age as an early intervention. I have recommended this to many parents, especially when I was working in private school and we didn't have such services. It's just something to keep in mind because you can have it helped now instead of waiting until it's a more "fossilized" speech pattern.

Re: Speech Therapists?
I am a speech path and I agree with everyone else so far. /R/ is a later developing sound and it is completely normal to have difficulty with this sound....but I do have a tip. Tell her to bite and smile to produce /r/ correctly. Model this posture and use a mirror...start with "ER".

Cool tip, sorry to hijack this thread, but any tip for "s" sound?

The bite and smile tip works with /s/ as well!

Re: Speech Therapists?
My cousin is standing behind me, she is a speech therapist and she said its ok if she's 4, she doesnt have to have the r sound until she is 6 or 7. It also depends on how she is producing the sound, is she substituting another letter or producing the sound incorrectly, a distorted sound?
