Therapists...Anyone see/has seen one?
I'm considering seeing someone to help me cope with some of the issues I've been going through the last couple months. The biggest being the move away from my family and friends. I was just curious if it's worth it or not. I'm not covered so it would all be out of pocket and I definitely don't want to waste money!
What do they do? Do they really help?

Re: Therapists...Anyone see/has seen one?
I was in a horrible robbery when I was 19. I went to one, but it was covered. It helped me so much. Then we started talking about other aspects of my life, I loved having someone to vent to. She was not judging at all, always made me feel like she was on my side. Then she said she felt that I had "graduated" I did not have anything else to say. so we parted. but I loved it and would definitely go again if needed.
Moving away is hard, especially if you don't know anyone yet.

I am still in therapy for the traumatic family drama that was created before my wedding. I worked through my anger and resentment issues. Made such a difference!! Gave me the tools to deal with family that do nothing but hurt you and try to make you miserable on purpose. I think having someone to talk too who is totally unbiased helps alot!

Re: Therapists...Anyone see/has seen one?
I started going to therapy for a variety of issues while we were engaged...found out a lot about myself and how to deal with it. Learned alot of why I was doing things that I did that weren't the smartest choices to make.
I really enjoyed it and it helped so much just to have an objective outlook on everything.
She was close to my age and in the process of getting engaged/married too. She really helped me strighten my act out and grow up!
Oh..and I'm thinking of going back if I could find someone in GA to go to

I think it's definitely worth it. There;s a lot you can't work through alone. My one word of advice is to realize that you might not find the right therapist right away, you have to shop around. If you don't feel comofrtable with someone, their styhle, approach, comments, attitude, then go elsewhere. it's not going to work if you're not comfortable

Re: Therapists...Anyone see/has seen one?
I actually had different therapies this year. DH and I went to a group therapy session which I actually got alot out of. I then went to a pyschotherapist on my own (which was covered) and I stopped going after 2 sessions. I just didn't feel like she was "getting me".

I was wondering the same thing. I have a couple of names picked out but my fingers can't seem to dial. I mean, do you 'shop' around for on? And if so, does that mean you have to start anew with each one? I think that is my biggest deterent.

Re: Therapists...Anyone see/has seen one?
I am a therapist so I may be biased but I really think it helps to have someone to talk to about your life change. I have gone to therapy myself and it truly changed my life. Even if it costs you some money, it will definately help if you find the right person.

Well I went to someone yesterday, he was an older man. I'm not sure what I think exactly. He just kind of assessed me and my situation. I have another appt scheduled for next week and guess I'll know more about his style and approach and can decide if I think he will help or not.

Re: Therapists...Anyone see/has seen one?
Im a therapist but I speak from my own personal experiences...it has truly helped me to talk to someone who is trained to help me figure things out. I think therapy is wonderful, and not because thats my profession, but because it has been so helpful to me when tough times entered my life!

Re: Therapists...Anyone see/has seen one?
I was just reading what others have written, and there is alot of truth..definately shop around. Therapists practice different theories, for example..some believe your troubles stem from childhood, etc. Other theories believe in sim ply changing your thinking..so find a therapist who believes what you believe..ask these questions before booking your appointment. Find a good fit! I know from going to therapy that there are alot of freaks out there in practice! Check things out..find someone you can talk too!!! I personally specialize in child and adolescent therapy, but if anyone has any questions, please FM me..Ill answer any questions that I can!

Re: Therapists...Anyone see/has seen one?
I agree with everything said, I also am biased.
BUt dont let cost deter you. There are a lot of places that have sliding scales if money is an issue. Sometimes the best way to find someone is referral form someone else. Where do you live?
I would at least go to 2 visits before you make a decision about if you like the therapist. the first session is not fair to judge since so much of it is information gathering.
