Spin-off to all the Daycare Posts

To all the moms with kids in daycare . . .

Do you check on your child during the day with a surprise visit on your lunch hour?

If yes, do you just see how your child is doing, or do you check what is going on to make sure the center isn't committing any violations?

If you check the center to see if you notice violations, have you found any?

If you've found violations, what did you do? (talk to the director, the teacher, call the Office of Children & Family Services, call the Child Care Council).

Re: Spin-off to all the Daycare Posts

I used to drop in unexpectedly every now and then just to check on "things".

Nothing was every unusual. If I noticed something, I would have talked to the teacher/director.

I work in Manhattan, so that's not an option. Sometimes DH will get off earlier and not mention it to them so he's "surprising" them. Everything has always been fine.

If yes, do you just see how your child is doing, or do you check what is going on to make sure the center isn't committing any violations?
I'm not concerned about violations going on - the surprise visit is more just to be a fly on the wall, see how our child is doing when they're not expecting us.

If you check the center to see if you notice violations, have you found any?
I've never noticed any and would pull him out if I did.

If you've found violations, what did you do? (talk to the director, the teacher, call the Office of Children & Family Services, call the Child Care Council).
I wouldn't keep my child in a center where there are violations.

ETS: I still call every day he is there. I know I don't need to, and I'm not worried that they wouldn't call me, but I guess it's just force of habit now. I just chat with the teacher, ask how he did with lunch and his mood. Generally it's the same thing - he's doing well, in a good mood, ate his lunch (or didn't like something) and is napping. Habit really!

No - I never have and in almost 2 years I have never called. I feel completely comfortable with her there and me calling or stopping by just takes away time from the teachers watching the children and creates distractions.

If you check the center to see if you notice violations, have you found any? I did before we started using the facility and they had none.

If you've found violations, what did you do? (talk to the director, the teacher, call the Office of Children & Family Services, call the Child Care Council).

I think they recently had one and one of my co-workers that uses them asked them about it. It was a paperwork issue. It's normal to be scared when you hear the word "violation" but when you read about some of them on the NYS site, most of them are very, very minor.

Re: Spin-off to all the Daycare Posts

I have never dropped by to see how things are going and I have only called 2x. Once to say I was going to be late, and a second time to ask if any of the girls do any babysitting on the side.

I can't stop by during the day due to geography.

As far as "violations" go, I go by the MTA policy:

"If I see something, I say something." I'd go to either the educational director or administrative director of the center unless it was such a gross violation that I couldn't speak with them.

Re: Spin-off to all the Daycare Posts

Hoping not to hi-jack but I think that this is too closely related to the OT for me to start a new topic and then we'd have 2 similar conversations going.

If you saw something extreme, would you report it or would you pull your kid out and never have contact with that school again? I spoke to someone who felt that their instinct might be to do the latter. I couldn't do it that way. Even if I pulled my kid out, I would want an extreme violation investigated.

To all the moms with kids in daycare . . .

Do you check on your child during the day with a surprise visit on your lunch hour?

I used to in NY. now I have videos on all day and my father and husband watch her off and on. I was clear to them that we do watch "oh i noticed she played with that boy today, thanks for picking her up when she went face first into that toy" I go home for lunch now and she's what we watch while we eat.

If yes, do you just see how your child is doing, or do you check what is going on to make sure the center isn't committing any violations?

I dont even know what violations to look for. I only check the normal stuff, are they clean, are they careful about changing diapers and feeding, do they wash hands (this place washes HER hands after each change to to start the practice which is cool) and Im a sticker for the #s .. i refuse to leave the room if there's 5 babies to one teacher.

If you check the center to see if you notice violations, have you found any?

None that I'm aware of

If you've found violations, what did you do? (talk to the director, the teacher, call the Office of Children & Family Services, call the Child Care Council).

NY I checked for violations online before putting her there. The corporation had one prior when they were smaller in a home, it was minor and a mistake on their part for not keeping up to date with State regs in regards to home care/child daycare. Since then they've become a full fledge daycare. The issue was resolved and measures were put in place to prevent it from happening again. I loved that daycare and easily felt like they were trusted family.

TX No i did not check Chat Icon AJ is older and I am more experienced. This place is a chain and have tons of measures in place, plus there's the cameras. If I found out there was violation I'd ask what it was, how it happened, how it was resolved and what measures they took to avoid it in the future. If those answers were sufficient I'd be cautious and aware but wouldnt remove AJ. If those answers were ify or suspicious I'd move my daughter quickly.

I never dropped in unexpectedly - I have picked him up early unannounced and in the last day care, wound up seeing things I wasn't happy about....

I have done the early unnannounced thing also. I never saw anything that was off and I was, in fact, impressed. That was when he was in the infant room. The infant care at this place is wonderful and I still believe in it so I hope they correct the major issues with the toddler care. Coming in early unannounced does help parents to know what is going on, good or bad.

I pop in whenever I can and rarely let them know when I will pick up early just so I can see how things are going.

I have and would pull my child from a daycare center if things were really bad. However, I always say talk to the director first...make that attempt before going over to the OCFS. Child Care Council is a good resource if you are looking to correct things in the current situation or looking for an evaluation.

same here. I used to drop in when Jacob was much younger. Any issues I would speak to the director or his teacher.

Both...when you check on your child you should be making sure the teachers are doing the "right" thing, in order for you to ensure your child is safe and well cared for!

Ok, if you noticed something SERIOUS (a child being abused, left alone, ANYTHING unsafe) I would go straight to office of children & family services. If it was something less severe I would try to resolve it with the teacher or director first!

I am sure that Marianna is fine.

I'm fairly confident of this myself (although not as confident as when she was with Heather for obvious reasons). That wasn't the reason I was asking.

It seemed to me that with back to school lots of mommies had either put their child in daycare for the first time, or put them back in daycare after a summer off, or had them "graduate" to the next age group room, and many of them were unhappy/uncomfortable. I was looking for feedback to understand where those feelings were coming from.

1st day of school = I ALWAYS have extra tissues at my desk...

Children return after being home with their parents ALL summer...vacations, no schedules, less naps and more time outside.... WHO THE HECK wants to trade that in???

Parents- are returning to work after a summer off, long maternity leaves, or are just getting back from vacation.... PLUS there kiddies are sad... which makes us as mothers even more upset...

I sent DS to daycare for the first time this week... I KNOW he is well cared for, and I know he is in an excellent school that is WELL managedChat Icon - yet I still cried....(despite he was 10ft away)

The children that are moving up...well....change is hard on little ones, esp to a new classroom with a new teacher who they dont know yet...

Think how scary it is to be this little person, who cant communicate, placed in a room with a bunch of strangers.... heck Im not a tiny person, and if that happened to me...Id cry all day too!

I cant imagine how hard it is to leave your baby with complete strangers.... but go with your instinct....it will tell you if something is wrong...

Pop in...check in.... familiarize yourself with regulations and make sure they are being followed....

But the sadness on MANY kids 1st day back is completely normal...even in an EXCELLENT school!

Re: Spin-off to all the Daycare Posts

I still check on DS every day at lunch he has been there for a year. I have had a few issues all of which were resolved quickly but went straight to the Teacher and then the Director.
