Re: Spin off to Oprah today, vaccines, MMR and Autism....
I thought that Jenny McCarthy was very well spoken and well versed in what SHE believes to be the cause of her son's autism. She mentioned seizures and the fact he had many of them. I questioned whether the seizures themselves were the cause And didn't she mention that in retrospect (after diagnosis) realize there had been signs all along? Either way, I think that you take her at her word and remember that yes, she is a mom (with lots of "mommy extinct" as she put it)but has not gone to medical school, trained in residency and has not been in practice. She knows her case (and what has worked for her) and IMO, no one should make broad sweeping generalizations to incite hysteria without having very strong correlations to support them.

5. Personally? There is something *different* in the environment- whether it be pollution, or the preservatives we consume. We are exposed to things nowadays that our parents/grandparents were never exposed to. Couple that with a genetic predisposition + the aforementioned reasons and you have MY opinion as to why the rapid rise in new cases.
I agree with all of your points, and wanted to highlight this one- I definitely agree, it seems to me if there is something causing an increase in autism it is not vaccines, since as you said more people are not vaccinating their children these days and there is much less thimerisol in vaccines now. I think there is something in the environment. I am actually leaning toward environmental pseudohormones, since there is a possible link found between testosterone levels exposed in the womb and autism.
I vaccinated my DD on the ped's schedule, I think it's more important to protect her from deadly diseases than worry about a tiny possibility of a side effect of the vaccine. I do understand that there is a lot of misleading information out there, and it is hard for the general public to get a lot of info about actual research done on this subject. So I do not judge moms who decide to delay or skip vaccinations, but I worry about the consequences- outbreaks of measles, etc in the future.

Also, for those splitting up the shot, you might want to look into the Thimerosal content (if that's your reason for splitting) because I know with the combination shot there is none, but I do believe I read with the split shots it's in there.
Wow. That would be interesting, wouldn't it?
Not if you get them in single dose vials, have them take it out of the package /box in front of you and watch them put the vaccine in the needle. Yes, I am THAT much of a PITA and yes, the nurses at the ped's office think I am nutty. However, Grace's doctor told me that she thought it was great that I am proactive with DD's health. Maybe she was placating me, but I don't care what they think of me. JMHO

Don't the docs do it in front of you anyway? Mine does.

Yes, but once they had the vaccine already in the needle and I flipped out. I made them give that to someone else's kid and I had them take the single dose vial (thimerisol free - I know because I READ the back of the box) out of the box and put it in a new needle in front of me.

1. Increasingly broad diagnosis: being that Autism is a "spectrum disorder", there are MANY forms of the disorder, with varying degrees of severity that fall into the "ASD" diagnosis. This includes Asbergers and PDD. It used to be that many children who were just diagnosed as MR (mentally retarded) are now covered under that autism diagnosis.
2. Increased funding for autism treatment=more diagnosis of the disorder = more funding, etc. Believe it or not, some children are diagnosed with ASD who do NOT have autism. These children may have some autistic-like tendencies (such as no eye contact, echolalic speech, self-stimming behaviors) but are actually "just" MR. By diagnosing them with autism, they are better able to receive services.
This is what I've heard/read is the reason for the increased rate of diagnosis.

My neice was diagnosed with PPD NOS and my nephew with Asperger's - they are brother and sister. I have to say that even as infants, you knew something wasn't right. As an infant my niece didn't want to be held - as she got older, she prefered animals over people. She has tantrums for seemingly no reason. My nephew - very early on, he never spoke - never wanted contact with other people - when he started to use words, he was like a robot. I'm not convinced it's the vaccines just based on my experiences with my neice and nephew. I will never disregard what some mother's think (as far as the thermisol causing the autism) because I just don't know enough about it. All I can base my feelings on are my experiences with my neice and nephew. It is a scary and heartbreaking diagnosis.
I'm sorry your family has to experience this, but I see this very often.
Almost every child I consult for, parents knew something wasnt right from way before vaccs...
Thank you!

Re: Spin off to Oprah today, vaccines, MMR and Autism....
It was weird for me too. I have thought SOOO much about this, that I am so scared. Its alwyas been such a fear of mine and I feel like Im seeing it everywhere.
I 100% believe in vaccinations.
I believe you cannot NOT vaccinate your children and not expect there to be re-occurences of deadly diseases and Im sscared to death of the way the public has choosen to stop vaccinating in recent yrs.
BUT on that note. I will split up the MMR and I will delay it. Its the least I can do to ease my mind.
The MMR disease usually occue in older ( average 5 yr old) chilcren when they reach school age. I will do it before then, but not before Age 2.

Just wondering - why does splitting up the vaccine (supposedly) make a difference?

Re: Spin off to Oprah today, vaccines, MMR and Autism....
I do not believe vaccines are to blame either. Like someone else had stated, a mother who goes to my ped's office has a daughter who is autistic, she blamed the vaccines and so did not choose to vaccinate her younger daughter. Well the younger wound up with it too!
The younger one also contracted a case of measles while away on vacation. So the day that girl was in my ped's office to be diagnosed, so was I and my son. The ped's office had to call back every single person who had been there that day (babies and parents) to come back in and either be vaccinated (as in my son's case) or prove that they had already been vaccinated (as in my case). The girl was sent to the hospital and had to be quarantined..It was on the news and everything. My Ped was PIZZZZZZED!
I mean it is totally a parent's choice whether or not to vaccinate, but things like that can happen, and in the rare instance that a child who hasnt been vaccinated comes down with one of these "rare" diseases, it puts a whole lot of other people/children at risk.
For me, its not worth it. I get Jacob vaccinated according to my ped's schedule. I dont split anything up, and I dont delay any. I believe the cause is both environmental and genetic factors. JMO...

Re: Spin off to Oprah today, vaccines, MMR and Autism....
Ugh I just keep going back and forth.
I believe whole heartedly in vaccinations and believe we need them. But something about that show and listening to her hit me really hard.
I guess it's up to me and talking to me ped and doing what's right for us.
It's all that question of "what if?" that keeps running through my mind. The not knowing and just wanting to protect and ensure the health of my child.

trust me, I speak a lot to my ped about it, but I really trust him and think he's great.
Also, I have seen enough in my own experiences to feel comfortable with what I'm doing
I keep track of every little thing in DS's development. Occupaional hazard. I know too much.
