Spin-off to Pledge of Allegiance (totally non-drama, just a question I promise!)

I am not American and therefore did not feel it was my place to become involved in the other thread. I am a Canadian, married to an American and living and working in New York.

So I was reading the other thread (very interesting) and got a bit confused. I have worked in 3 different schools in NYC since living here and I'm fairly certain the Pledge was not recited in ANY of them at all during the day? I'm not a classroom teacher, I'm a social worker, but I am in and out of the classroom and do see students during the first period of the day and I have never seen or heard the recitation of the Pledge in the schools I have worked in.

Is it a requirement? Is it something that is happening quickly in the morning and I'm just missing it?

I asked DH if he recited the Pledge in school every morning when he was younger and he shrugged and said he doesn't remember. Would someone mind shedding some light on this for me...the tone of the other thread implied to me that this was something mandatory that happens in all schools every morning and yet I can't remember seeing it or even hearing it referenced at all in 3 different school settings (2 public, 1 private).

Just something I was curious about!

I am old, but when I was in school K-12, public, we said it every morning. We were told to stand for the pledge. If boys had hats on them removed them. In elementary school, each teacher did it in the morning. In JHS and HS it was done over the PA. If you were in the hall, you stopped walking and still put your hand over your heart and said it. I don't know what goes on in the classrooms today, but I do know when I go to niece and nephew's school concerts we stand and say it.

We used to say it every morning during announcements/home room.

The teachers probably know better but I think its required by the doe. That said, in dhs school, the principal does not enforce it, so they dont say it, even though they are supposed to.

I teach in NYC. We say the pledge and sing my country tis of thee each morning as a school. It's part of the principal's morning announcements.

Re: Spin-off to Pledge of Allegiance (totally non-drama, just a question I promise!)

This is so interesting that my experience has been in schools where it isn't recited. Granted, all 3 schools I have worked in don't/didn't do a morning announcement over the PA system so that may be part of it I guess. I think I'm going to ask someone tomorrow at work about it.

Growing up on Long Island, we had to stand and recite the Pledge every day AND sing My Country Tis of Thee. When I became an elementary teacher I was in schools on LI as well as Queens and the Pledge was part of the morning announcements first thing in the morning. The principal or a student would lead the Pledge over the PA system in the school.

If they don't do announcements over the loudspeaker, it might be that the classes are reciting the pledge with their teachers on their own. If you are not in a classroom at that time, you wouldn't know that they are doing it. I know our school does the pledge before first period starts. I think it is mandated that schools recite the pledge. I know that even when my principal has meetings, such as PTA in the evening, it is required.

We said it every day in school. And I am now an NYC teacher and we say it daily as well. In fact, I think we weren't doing it but began after 9/11.

This is what I'm thinking. I am really curious so I may try to sit in on a first period class to see. Thanks for all the responses!

In the MS I work in they do. They recite it in the elem schools in my district as well. It is said during morning announcements. When I worked in a HS they did not recite the pledge, also did not have morning announcements which is probably why.

We said it everyday from grades K-12. I know that they don't do it in my DH's middle school in the city.

My son is now in a NYC public school and I often volunteer in his classroom. As a naturalized citizen of the USA, it makes me immensely proud to watch my son put his little arm on this heart and pledge allegiance to his country every morning! Chat Icon

I work in a NYC public middle school and every morning we have morning annoucements and say the pledge together. I worked in another NYC public school and it was the same.

I went to public school (LI) and said the pledge every day in the morning from K-12.

My DH teaches in a city school. They do not say the pledge.

ETA He teaches at a school that has deaf and hard of hearing students. So I've NEVER heard an announcement on a loud speaker there.

Same. I worked in two NYC HS's, and never did it. Neither had a homeroom period or morning announcements.
