only for the required first 10 days.
Required??
when 2 of my cousins had babies, they were told that it's necessary to BF for the first 10 days. I'm not sure why...
hmmm..I never heard of such a thing.

Re: Spinoff: Are you going to breastfeed if you have kids?
I didn't want to originally, but after DH and I read up on it and all its benefits, I decided to give it the old college try come September. However, if it doesn't work out, I don't think I'd be too disappointed

Re: Spinoff: Are you going to breastfeed if you have kids?
I breastfed Danielle 12 years ago, and was verrrry discouraged at first. It was extremely difficult...she didn't latch on properly, sore ninnies, etc...(sorry tmi)....so I breastfed her for the "recommended" (NOT required) first 12 weeks of life...after that I switched her to formula. I did the same for Sofia 2 years ago when she was born....breastfed for the first 3 months. For me, it was a very emotional, bonding experience with both of my babies. If I were to have another child, I would breastfeed again! Aside from the bonding, and closeness that I felt, I also feel that there ARE health benefits to being breastfed. To date, neither one of my daughters have EVER had an ear infection, or any more than a common cold.

Re: Spinoff: Are you going to breastfeed if you have kids?
It is reccommened that you do it for the fist x weeks (it deends on who you ask). I don't know if I'm going to do it. I'd like to, but I have one really weird concern. I know BFing is supposed to give babies better immunity (I was not BFed and I am sick ALL the time..could be unrelated), but I've always wondered, and I have to ask the doctor about this...I have such terrible allergies to EVERYTHING, can those be passed on by BFing too? This could be totally stupid but I was wondering if your immunities can be passed on, why not hyper immunities (i know this is not really so scientific and it's not the same exact thing)...but I'm scared about that. I think passing on my allergies is much more hamrful than NOT passing on my immunities.

Not to offend anyone at all. I'm not a mom or TTC, so i don't know much about it. Why would you NOT want to? I mean your body is producing arguabl the best food source for the baby, why would you not give it to them?

I will probably try to. My sister had a very bad experience with it, so it makes me nervous. If I have difficulty, I will switch to formula.
My sister and I were not breast fed and turned out just fine!

Most of us are fine whether we were breastfed or spanked or fed twizzlers all day or whatever. There's so much fear involved in parenting, that if you don't do it the exact "right way your baby will die and they NEED to be breastfed, etc. It has prven health benefits, but that doesn't mean it will impact the baby negatively if he doens't have it.

I'm planning on breastfeeding. I'm going to try it at least. I read in a book that should at least give it a try, because you may surprise yourself.

Well, for myself I would be afraid. I have implants and although the saline is safe the exterior is silicone and I would not want to chance it with my baby.

I'd give it a chance..they say it's the best way to loose all the "baby weight". I wasn't breast-fed and I turned out fine..

Re: Spinoff: Are you going to breastfeed if you have kids?
I *think* I will give it a try when the time comes. It's very convenient to not have to deal with bottles and stuff...but what's really attractive to me about NOT BFing is that babies who are formula fed tend to sleep better (formula is heavier in their stomachs, takes longer to digest and tires them out) and the fact that my DH will be able to take part in feedings (and MUST take some of the nighttime feedings! ).
I'm no where near needing to make this decision though and I think I would need to talk with my doctor about it when the time comes - it's great that you pass antibodies along to your little one, but to be honest, my brother and I were both bottle fed and we're fine, no allergies, rarely get sick, etc.

I didn't BF my daughter and don't plan on doing it for the next child. Its just not something that I ever planned on doing.
I give MAJOR kudos to those who are able to do it.

None taken :)
Yes, breastmilk is best but there are so many factors. Some babies don't latch on, others bite your ninnies raw and some women just aren't comfortable with the whole BF'ing thing. The list could go on for hours - I've heard a million stories and a million different situations that either helped breastfeeding or didn't allow it to happen.
Like in my post it was just never a thought for me - I always knew I'd bottle feed even though I know the benefits. I think this is a very personal decision and each woman views it differently.

Actually, I've heard the opposite. The nurses will often give a baby a bottle straightaway if you don't mention you want to breast feed.

Re: Spinoff: Are you going to breastfeed if you have kids?
I plan on Bf my baby unless my body doesn't cooperate. I will also pump to have a supple of bottles so that DH may feed the baby also, and any help we may have (as in family members).
Not sure when I'll be going back to work, so that is obviously a factor as well.
BUT...I'm not all that comfortable doing it public either, so I guess I'll become a hermit or only go out for 2 hours at a time!!

Actully I think thats a crock. With Emma I thought that was true (exclisuvly breastfed) but Jeremy has slept through the night (which they consider 5 hours) since birth and he is also exclusivly breastfed. And you could pump BM and have your DH give it to your baby.

This is SOOO true!!! If you want to breastfeed be adamant that the baby will get no bottles in the nursery and you will feed on demand!

As for being comfortable doing it in public, you may change your mind when after birth everyone and their mother has seen your "area", there is no more shame after becoming a mother

Re: Spinoff: Are you going to breastfeed if you have kids?
Well, with my son I did not, I had no desire to, I think I was embarassed at the whole thing, can't explain why. This time I had said I would definelty give it a go, then I found out I'm having twins so, I'm still going to try and if I don't succeed I will still pump.
