Spinoff: Dh and time taken off, if your DH is a teacher......
If your DH is a teacher, how much time is he taking off? Does he get paternity leave?
My husband is a teacher and he hasn't checked about his paternity leave yet. I i would like to know what other teacher husbands are doing. He has a lot of sick days stored up, but I don't know if there is any official paternity leave for teachers.
TIA

One of my friends husbands is a teacher and he is taking April through June. He gets the 12 weeks FMLA I believe.

DH is an assistant principle in NYC, I just asked him last night. Our baby is due at the end of August, I hope the baby comes a little early so he'll be home. He said his principle would probably let him take a couple days but weeks are out of the question. I think city employees are entitled to take FMLA though, not sure if that applies to your DH.

I have been trying to get my DH to find what he is entitled to for ages now. Our son was born the end of June so he was off the whole summer and that was the best.
This time I'm thinking he will be home at least a full two weeks.

Same here I'm due mid June. So hopefully the baby will come around that time or even alittle later. But either way then he will be off the whole summer with me.

As teachers, men and women are allowed up to 12 weeks of FMLA (family medical leave act: leave for self or family member medically related). That is with no pay and no insurance. He can use his family illness days (most districts have 5- 10 of them)

Please have your DH check with his benefits office in his district or his union officer about this. According to my union, fathers are entitled to 5 consequtive days off once the baby is born (they have to use their sick days) but they do get paid.
And then the father has the option of taking FMLA (12 weeks unpaid).

AS far as i know both mothers and fathers are entitled to the 12 weeks FMLA without pay. But your district may have a policy that pays better than that.

As long as he has been working there for at least 12 months, he's entitled to FMLA (12 weeks of unpaid leave). It's up to the district, but he may not be allowed to use his sick days to get paid. The reason he would be taking FMLA leave is to care for a newborn. Since the reason doesn't have to do with his own serious health condition, the district does not have to substitute accrued paid sick leave for unpaid FMLA leave.

Most of the guys in my school just use thier sick time. I don't think they have an official paid paternity leave.... welll I know they don't. They don't even have paid maternity leave.. it's sick time or unpaid!
