Spinoff- Do you think Bush prevented a terrorist attack
In light of the elections, I have heard many people say that they think Bush prevented any further attacks.
But I don't agree with this.
IMO, the MO of Al Quaeda has always been strike- lay dormant for many years- and strike again. In 1993, Al Quaeda bombed the twin towers. They did it again 8 years later.
Also, if you do research, there were many Al Quaeda attacks that were prevented before 2000.
Just wondering what other people thought.

Re: Spinoff- Do you think Bush prevented a terrorist attack
I think that the American Government as a whole (not just the President) have been responsible for an increase in security in several sectors that have helped keep us safe here on our own soil. However, I believe that other nations (Britain, is the one that is on top of the list) have done an enormous amount that has also kept us safe.
The thing to remember though is that truly, we are not safe. We have neglected port security, rail security and many other weaknesses (Northern and Southern Boarder, anyone?) and I do believe that the President and his administration are partly to blame for those deficiencies. Many in Congress have been pushing for more security in those areas and their pleas and actions have fallen on deaf ears.

Re: Spinoff- Do you think Bush prevented a terrorist attack
No I don't.
From what I've learned, Al Quaeda's attack on 9/11 and our subsequent response and fall from favor in the world was essentially their mission. We damaged our image worldwide which in turn created multiple enemies and caused many independent Al Quaeda, anti-American groups to form in response - that was the goal. The mission wasn't to destroy us internally or physically beyond the damage that they already did. 9/11 was essentially an ad campaign for Al Quaeda and it succeeded.

Re: Spinoff- Do you think Bush prevented a terrorist attack
yes - i think he, others in the US govt and in our military -- as well as others in the int'l community -- have all contributed to the prevention of another attack. And, I do think Bush deserves credit for working with all those people on intelligence/security issues.
that being said -- i too do not think we are totally secure. and, i do think our borders are one area where there is a huge issue. unfortunately, that issue extends beyond security and into the immigration issue...and there is not a whole lot of consensus on it bc there are other sensitivities involved.

ITA with this. 9/11 was a horrible, terrible tragedy, but the aftermath and what was done (rather, NOT done) is what made us the laughing stock.
We're talking about the President who will go down in history as the one who spent the most days on vacation during his 2 terms--how can you prevent ANYTHING when you're sunning yourself all over the globe?

Exactly. And there have been other attacks in Madrid and Bali since 9/11 not to mention numerous attacks inside Iraq and Afghanistan.

I agree.
I also believe any person in the position as President would have taken the same security measures at our borders, etc.
I think if anything his actions and the Congress that condoned his actions (because a President does not act alone) are responsible for making us more of a target of terrorism than before.
