I never even thought about this possibility, but someone brought it up on my last post.

Do you think formula is good much longer than an hour and the companies tell us to toss it so we will use more and they will profit from it? Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Spinoff: Do you think formula companies tell us to toss it after an hour so we'll buy more?

yes and no....

I know with Pedialyte there is a time frame to use it in.

With bottles, I believe the same is true....after eating some of it, the babys' germs get into the bottle and the enzymes start to break down the formula and therefore some of the nutrients might not be as potent or even present after the babys' saliva gets in there.

But..I have given a bit of a bottle after that 1 hr mark

Yes...and I have used formula after more than an hour without any problems. Not that I would suggest it to anyone but for me...I have had no problems with a bottle that is a little older (like 2 or 2.5 hours). So long as it hasn't been in the heat.

ITA with this!

I wouldn't do it with EVERY bottle, but sometimes it happens with a full bottle and I hate to see it go to waste.

Hmmm , would you drink a glass of milk that has been out for an hour? Chat Icon

I honestly dont think they are doing it for the money but to let you know that the FDA doesnt rec it b/c you can get sick. Its a chance you take, read the label who knows what happens with all those ingredients mixed together after saliva and air has touched it.

Yes & no.

I think there is validity with bateria, etc. I always looked at it like "would I drink milk that's been sitting out for an hour?" For me the answer is no.

I think $$$ is part of it...but this stuff doesn't have preservative chemicals in it..by FDA regulations, the formula companies test it to make sure that there's no growth for a certain time period and that's what their labeling must state....so they can ensure that it will be ok to feed your baby an hour later at RT if its come into contact with saliva...but after that, they don't collect the data to support the freshness.....does it immediately go bad at 61 minutes, probably not.....but the risk of bacteria or other organisms growing in there increases.....

When DS was first born I wouldnt feed it to him after 1/2 hr. Now I have gone 2 hrs if I am stuck and nothing happened. I dont heat always heat DS's bottles so alot of times the milk stays cool for quite awhile.

Re: Spinoff: Do you think formula companies tell us to toss it after an hour so we'll buy more?

I do think alot of it has to do with the $$. As far as me drinking milk that has been out for an hour, no I wouldn't because I like my milk cold. DD didn't like cold bottles, so to me it didn't matter that much if it was room temp for her. If you're at a party and they put out coffee & cake and have the milk for the coffee out, and you decide later on that you want another cup of coffee, the milk has probably been out for a while, and it hasn't spoiled, so I think it is fine. It takes a while before milk turns sour (unless it is out in the sun).

Yes and No. Like someone else said, once the saliva enters the bottle it starts to break it down, however the time scale on the bottle is only a guideline.

One thing I don't understand is why formula is so expensive!!! In the UK a big tin of powdered formula, which you guys pay $25 dollars for only costs £5.98 (thats about $12) and the RTF comes in juicebox sized and they cost about 80cents. I just don't understand why it is so expensive.

Does anyone have any ideas on that?

Are you allowed to advertise Formula in magazines and stuff in the US??? In the UK you can only advertise baby milk for 6 months and over.

I think that it's OK to give them the formula after an hour. I used to toss it, but then saw how much I was putting down the drain. Then, I started to put the unfinished bottles in the fridge and give it to him when he wanted it.

I don't think so, if you think about it what if you left milk in a cup out over 2hrs would you drink it? It probably wouldn't taste so good. But my ped said the reason you should throw it away after an hr is because of bacteria. However, what I do is if the baby started and only drank an oz then I would hold on to for an hr and if he didn't wake up I would toss it, but if he didn't drink any I would hold on to it for about 2hrs.

Yes, they do advertise formula. I know Good Start is a huge advertiser.

As to why it's so expensive. Who knows? Because the people who own the company are greedy. Because they probably have all union workers in their factories who require outragous pension plans. Who knows. Same reason EVERYTHING is expensive. Chat Icon
