Re: Spinoff of something on Pregnancy: Who bought your crib?
My parents bought DD his bedroom furniture from Belinni (3 pieces).
It was not 'expected' but it is pretty much a tradition in my family and DH's family that the parents or grandparents buy furniture. If my parents didn't buy it then my husbands grandmother would have bought me the crib and my MIL would have bought the other two pieces. It's just what both families do.
Maybe the girls on the other thread don't 'expect' it ... maybe they know what their families are like traditionally. I know that was the case for me. I knew someone was buying the furniture - it was just a matter of who.

MIL bought the crib, we bought a bookshelf and we reused a dresser we already had. you would never know it wasn't a matching set and the whole room cost $300

Re: Spinoff of something on Pregnancy: Who bought your crib?
I didn't expect it, but my mom bought my crib & mattress. She (& my dad, before he passed), bought each of my sisters & brothers the same for their kids, too. They did it because they wanted to, not that they were expected to. Also, these were not top of the line, expensive items. For example, my crib cost about 120.00 and the mattress about 80.00 or less. They are good quality just not fancy, designer, etc.

Re: Spinoff of something on Pregnancy: Who bought your crib?
My parents bought Ryan's furniture. She said she wanted to and felt "it was only fair" since she bought my sister's first DC furniture.
It was $2500. But, we do plan on using the same set for the next one.

We bought her furniture ourselves.
My MIL wanted us to register for it so I suspect she wanted to buy it for us but we didn't want to register at more than one store and we preferred that people give us any of the other million baby necessities instead.

Re: Spinoff of something on Pregnancy: Who bought your crib?
My parents/inlaws bought the furniture for both kids. I knew they were going to buy the furniture. Just because in our family, the parents always buy the bedroom furniture when you get married and the bedroom set for the grandchildren.
ETA: my parents also bought the bedding for both children

Re: Spinoff of something on Pregnancy: Who bought your crib?
Even though we did not expect people to buy it, they wanted to, which I thought was very generous of them. My grandparents bought the crib, my grandma the dresser and my parents bought the glider.
We were totally expecting to buy furniture for this baby, but again, we were told that they want to buy it. I don't expect it, I think it is VERY generous!

Re: Spinoff of something on Pregnancy: Who bought your crib?
My MIL gave us money towards DS's crib. His whole set was and I never expected anyone to buy it for us. I never really expect anything from anyone and I was happy my MIL wanted to give us money towards it and she also bought the mattress. My mom bought the bedding and accessories.

No...the word expect was used A LOT
Maybe b/c it seems like a lot of families, parents do want to help and will buy the furniture, people are having unreal expectations? I don't know....

Re: Spinoff of something on Pregnancy: Who bought your crib?
My parents and IL's bought my DS's crib and dresser. My mom bought his bassinet.
We bought my DD's crib and my IL's bought her bassinet.
I really didn't expect anything. I did know that my mom and IL's would want to buy a bigger gift.

Re: Spinoff of something on Pregnancy: Who bought your crib?
I don't see what was so bad about the thread on the preggo board. Some families will do that. We bought ours ourselves - no one offered. And my DS did not have a bedroom set. He had a crib from BRU (floor model at a discount) and Ikea furniture. I thought it was cute and heck nonetheless. But I wouldn't expect anyone to buy it bc that's not how it works in our families. My Mother was not in a position to do so nor does she ever do big items like that - she was generous in her own way and loves the kids to pieces. My MIL did buy me the bedding and my SILs threw me a kick azz shower and got the stroller. But I didn't expect it. However I could see how some would bc that's how things work in their lives. I don't see what that is bad just bc it's not how it works in your life (my life..whoever's life generally speaking). Live and let live.

Didn't say it was bad.
I was just surprised at the word expect is all.

Re: Spinoff of something on Pregnancy: Who bought your crib?
Sorry crashing.
When it comes time- I don't "expect" that my parents will offer to get one of the big ticket items- but I would be surprised if they didn't- because I know how they are.
I plan on being fully prepared to buy all my own things.
I didn't read the word "expect" once on that whole thread- except in the context of "expecting" as in pg.
It seemed to me that the OP was asking a valid question since she cant have a shower for religious reasons and everyone was really grateful when people did step up to offer.
ET clarify

Re: Spinoff of something on Pregnancy: Who bought your crib?
My mother bought DD her crib, and yes I expected it. HOWEVER, the only reason I expected it was b/c my mom has a policy of "do for one, do for the other" and she bought my niece her crib. (and she could afford it).

Re: Spinoff of something on Pregnancy: Who bought your crib?
My in-laws, though I still feel bad about it.
I picked out what I would have bought and they picked up the tab. Normally, since someone else is paying, I would have picked something much cheaper. I couldn't do that because I am keeping this crib FOREVER. I plan to use it as a bench so it will always be a part of our home.
Edit: Just wanted to add I didn't expect it. I think it was some kind of tradition. They kinda pushed it on us --

Re: Spinoff of something on Pregnancy: Who bought your crib?
I had every intention of buying all of Marron's furniture. My MIL said she wanted to buy the crib. Apparently she did this for my SIL and wanted to do the same for us. We bought everything else.
Nobody bought us any other furniture for our house, so why would I expect anybody to buy the furniture for our child???

I am reading a post and I am kinda shocked that people seem to "expect" that someone will "step up" and buy their furniture
We bought our crib and his nursery furniture is hand me down from a friend of our family. My SMIL did buy our glider, but that was surprise at my shower...
I just didn't realize that people "expected" this.
I thought the same thing when I read that post. We bought all of our furniture. We didn't expect anyone to buy it for us, and nobody offered.
