No which is partly why several states have already issed law suits against this health care bill...of course NY is not one of them

Aren't we mandated to purchase car insurance, if we want to drive legally?

Re: Spinoff of sorts: Do you think it is within the constitutional rights of the government to mandate citizens to purchase a product or service from another private citizen and or corporation?

do I think the govt can tell ME to buy socks from YOU?

no

do I think the government can tell insurance companies and businesses to ensure their employees have access to healthcare in light of the clusterfuck they have created?

YES

it's not as simple as the OP (and others) make it out to be.

the govt mandates that when you buy an automobile, you insure it.

it's an issue of responsibility.

I don't see it being that much of a stretch to mandate that a business, "buying" the services of another, be made to do the same.

I also believe that the govt has jurisdiction over public health issues (mandating vaccinations for schools...a problem for many uninsured who end up going to state depts of health etc) so this is sort of an extention of that.

but doesn't the government already mandate things to keep us safe?

the FDA
seatbelt laws in exhange for highway funds etc

I don't see health care as that different

it is meant to protect us...the people

you can also choose to remain uninsured...for a fee. Which is OK with me, bc if a person chooses to remain uninsured, its almost a given that at some point they WILL need medical care, and the penalty will (albeit modestly) offset the cost of caring for them went they walk into a Drs office or ER uninsured.

I don't think it's constitutional for me to carry car insurance.

I will drive around with no car insurance and it will be someone else's problem if I get into an accident.

oh and just FYI, individual mandates have long been a republican idea as well. if not originally theirs....just look at Romney, McCain during the Clinton Administration and Thompson under Bush.

Isnt the bottom line, that one way or another we will pay for healthcare? With rising costs and deeper economic financial hardships, some attributed to the system if it remained status quo......we either pay for the costs to treat ALL the uninsured bc ERs cannot turn them away or we all pay for insurance (or its penalty). Dont we pay either way?

I'm sorry but i just do not see the comparison of car insurance and forced health insurance.
If I want to own a car, I will have to carry car insurance.
Just because I am living and breathing I am forced to purchase a health plan otherwise face fines, penalties, and possible imprisonment?

I don't see the comparison.
