Spinoff of the lunch ideas post-dairy free?
So my kids love their table food. They will still eat baby food, and I usually do give them a small portion just to make sure they got enough nutrition.
But I need ideas for dairy free meals (no cheese, milk, mayo etc) as you can see that cuts out a LOT. No mac n cheeese, grilled cheese, chicken salad. I am going to try to find some hummus that is not processed with peanuts-which he is also allergic to. Anyone have other creative ideas? Right now I am basically giving them meat leftovers with vegetables. Ronan is allergic to beef and Declan is allergic to dairy, peanut, apple and pear. TIA!

My friend's DD is allergic to soy, milk and a lot of other things. She gives her DD spaghetti squash or rice pasta and mixes it with a tomato carrot puree or other vegetable purees.
What about giving them beans? Is it too early for soups?

Re: Spinoff of the lunch ideas post-dairy free?
Lentils boiled in chicken broth w/ pasta - DS LOVES this
The spinach/brocoli pancakes by Dr. Praegers
Lentil/Pea/Chicken Soup
I make turkey meatloaf in muffin pans and freeze them, so I have individual little meatloafs
zuchinni/banana bread
Chopped spinach - I add this to everything to get extra veggies in
Ground turkey meat, sauted w/ a little EVOO S&P, I then add in chopped tomatoes and brown rice - another thing DS loves
Can you make "grilled cheese" w/ those veggie slices? Aren't they dairy free?

I'm pretty sure the Dr Praegers have something they can't have it them-maybe processed in a plant that processes peanuts or something? I don't remember but I've looked at them before.
Marlo-thanks for all the good ideas! Question on the lentils-do you buy the dried ones? How do you cook them? What do you put in yoru turkey meatloaf? How do you give him soup? Strain out the liquid?

Lentils - I buy the dried ones, soak them overnight in cold water. The next day I boil them for about 15/20 min in chicken broth. You can cook them longer if you want them more on the mushy side. I just toss them w/ some pasta and drop of EVOO.
Turkey Meatloaf - I put in about 1/2 a small onion (chopped), 1 egg (you can probably leave out - maybe add a little EVOO for moisture), breadcrumbs, ketchup and some dijon mustard I spray the inside of a muffin pan and cook at 350 for about 40 minutes
Soup - I usually drain out most of the broth and just give him the chicken, celery, pasta, carrots. I will sometimes help him drink the broth too. If it's another soup (pea, lentil), I still have to help him or else I have a soup explosion on my hands LOL

Re: Spinoff of the lunch ideas post-dairy free?
Here is a hummus recipe my sister gave me - it is AMAZING! This way you can add/leave out whatever he's allergic to . . .
Lauren's Hummus Recipe 15 oz can of chic peas (calls for 16 oz, but I can only find 15oz cans) 1/4 cup of water from chic peas reserved 1-2 tbl fresh lemon juice 1 clove garlic 1 1/2 tbl tahini 1 1/2 tbl olive oil pinch of kosher salt Directions: In a blender or food processor, blend chic peas, water from can, lemon juice, garlic, tahini and salt for 3-5 minutes. Blend in olive oil until mixture is creamy. You can blend in or top with anything you like!

Can they have sauce yet? Pasta with sauce......maybe turkey meat sauce
I think you can find butternut squash raviolis
Have you tried the morningstar products instead of chicken nuggets? They make chick nuggets and chick patties which are made from chick peas and are sooooo yummy.
Perogies - potato and onion

Great ideas...my DS is allergic too.
FYI - be careful with breadcrumbs, some of them have milk in them.

Re: Spinoff of the lunch ideas post-dairy free?
You need to pick up a vegan cookbook! If they can tolerate soy, you can substitute soy cheese for regular, etc.

You can make meatballs and meatloaf without an egg, I've done it before (too lazy to get eggs )

Re: Spinoff of the lunch ideas post-dairy free?
I just made DD mac-n- cheese and she LOVED it. This is how I make it for her (I also make DS this recipe expect I use dairy..so much easier and cheaper than Kraft).
1tbsp of margarine 2 slices of Tofutti Chedder slices a little less than a 1/4 cup of soy mlk melt all that together and their is your cheese sauce.
If you serve it to cool the sauce does start to solidify but she really liked it.
You can also make chicken cutlets instead of egg you can use italian dressing and then panko bread crumbs since their is no dairy in them.
I made DD a "dirty" (mushroom) risotto with peas. I found a recipe on food network, I think it was a Giada recipe. I added peas and swapped out the butter for margarine. The great thing about risotto is that it gets that creamy texture from the starch in the aborrio rice so you don't need any milk.
I use to make this chicken pot pie recipe while I was nursing. Again I swapped out the butter and I think I used olive oil. This was soooo good. I didn't add the tarragon or thyme. I did add a pie crust ontop.
My DD's all time favorite was chicken breast cooked in tomato sauce with peas. I buy the bone in chicken breast because I think the meat is juicer and not as dry. She would devour it!!
My DD is 2 and I still struggle with this everyday. It was easier when she wasn't picky but she caught on quick that my DS was.

This is basically what I do, but you need to find soy cheese that doesn't have milk derivatives in it which is hard to come by. Tofutti doesn't.

Vegan Slices are the only cheeses I have found to not contain dairy. I've only seen it in Whole Foods. Most soy cheeses or veggie cheeses have casein as a main ingredient.
I think the list Mkr posted is copied from what I posted a while back. I still always feel like I have no ideas for lunch foods though.
Here are 2 good cookbooks to give you some ideas:
Whole Foods Allergy Cookbook All of the recipes are free of the top 8 allergens.
What's to Eat? MIlk, egg, and nut free cookbook

Re: Spinoff of the lunch ideas post-dairy free?
Thanks Jersey Moms! I was hesitant to try the tofu cheeses because when I was trying to BF him I tried some and it was NASTY But they do seem to like everything.
On a side note-when I was getting them soy yogurt I realized only 1 brand at the Whole Foods by me doesn't have milk ingredients...what is the purpose of having a soy product with milk in it!

Personally I think the vegan slices are gross! My DS didn't like them the first time I tried them, but then I tried again a few months later and he ate it. Tofutti cream cheese is dairy free.
As for yogurt Whole Soy & Co. and Silk are both safe. I also let DS have soy pudding occasionally as a treat. I think Zen Soy or something is the brand. There's another soy pudding that's safe too, but I forget the brand.
Another tip...check your grocery store's kosher section for some products. I buy kosher bread crumbs. Also, there's a kosher consumme powder you can use to make broth for soups.
