I see Santa as secular in the image that he's not part of the Christian Church teachings/prayers during the Christmas season.

I don't understand why people try and say Santa is secular and so is a tree. these symbolize Christmas, which is celebrating the birth of Jesus.

Jews don't believe that Jesus is the messiah or the son of God.

IMO, santa and a tree and everything else that has anything to do with Christmas is Christian.

Thank you! I feel the same way - although they may be synbols of a commercialized holiday - it is a Christian holiday. It is not a holiday tree, it's a Christmas tree. IMO, anyone who thinks otherwise (that's it's a holiday tree), is only kidding themselves.

I can't speak on behalf of other religions, but I know many people who put up a christmas tree, have family over on Christmas day and open gifts that morning and are not Christian. They do indeed call it a holiday tree (why I don't know). While Santa and the tree and even candy canes for that matter have deep roots stemming from Christianity, these objects have become commercialized in a sense that I feel they no longer scream religion or Christianity.

I see it as secular. St. Valentine is attributed to Valentine's Day, but I don't think most people thinking of February 14th as a religious.

I agree.

Do you see a heart shaped box of chocolates as religious? A santa Hat has nothing to do with the birth of Christ. Is it associated with a Christian holiday.... yes. But is a Santa Hat in and of itself religious.... NO.

I'm Catholic and as much as it is not technically a religious symbol, meaning he's not displayed in church, he does symbolize Christmas time which is a Catholic holiday.

I wouldn't categorize Santa Claus as religious. However, it symbolizes a religious holiday. So its a 50/50. I really cant say one way or another.

I completely agree. Santa is part of the commercialized aspect of Christmas, but he is still a symbol of the holiday.

I agree 100%. If there was no Christmas celebrating the birth of Christ, there would be no Santa. To me, that makes it a religious symbol.

DW had several asian roommates in college. None of them were Christian. They loved Christmas trees, Santa, and presents. They loved the commercialization of the holiday. They loved giving and getting presents. For them, it definitely had nothing to do with anything religious.

I think the season and symbols are what you make of it. If you believe Santa represents the Christian Christmas, then he does. If you believe he represents big business, presents, and maxing your credit cards to the limits, then he does that. If you believe that Santa just represents the pagan origins of the december season, then he does that, too.

not growing up in my house! when I was around 15 I brought home a 2" tree and called it a "Hanukkah Bush". My dad practically ripped it out of my hand and threw it in the garbage outside. I was SO upset at the time, but I get it now.

My coworker is upset because the so called Chanukah bush is missing. I keep telling her we don't have trees and I hated it when she put it up all the other years. She doesn't get what the big deal is. Obviously Santa isn't a religious symbol but I wouldn't say he's secular either.

It depends on what part of the country you are in. Maybe even what part of a state...If you go to Cleveland and then to Youngstown, the meaning totally changes. I actually learned in college, when I went to my friends home in Youngstown, that St. Nick was a literal Saint. In Cleveland all the kids go to see Santa, all forms of catholicism and christianity plus anyone else with a kid.

I really cannot pass judgement on Santa due to the fact I have seen him portrayed both ways. Chat Icon

I work with a Muslim woman and her family decorates a "Christmas" tree. They exchange gifts as well.
