Why is this a drama topic? I missed it the last time it was posted.

I don't remember either. However, I can see how it could potentially be dramatic.

Sometimes, I think, people are unable to have an adult converstaion without either being offended themselves or pointing out the fact that a statement could "potentially" be offensive to "someone" and therefore is WRONG. Then the drama can stem off of that post and a whole bunch of people can back peddal and say "that's not what I meant." blah blah blah.

Re: spinoff to 529 - who is paying for college?

We are lucky, my parents are well off in their retirement (wasn't like that when I grew up) and they have set up 529 accounts for their grandkids.

Once daycare is finished, we plan to inest that money (for ourselves) and we can tap it for college if we need to.

You can take loans out for college, you can't take loans out for retirement.

Re: spinoff to 529 - who is paying for college?

I feel where there is a will, there is a way.

Out of my mothers 6 that have graduated hs, so far all 6 of us have received scholarships. We knew we needed one in order to go to school.

Some were big, some were smaller...

If my kids want to go to a state school, hopefully we can help cover the cost. Anything beyond that, I really can't see me paying for that.

One of my sisters is a nun, all my kids get 1/2 off at her university...so I guess that will be there oos private school option.

I contribute to my retirement fund...

We have a 529 plan and we will help with their educations. I will not finance 100% of their education. Students Loans will be part of the package.

Re: spinoff to 529 - who is paying for college?

Well another thing DH and I have thought about is that he is a cop and very often being NYC cops retire so young they get jobs as security, etc. He knows a few people who took jobs working in security at college like NYU, etc. and their kids basically go to school for free now. We have definetely though about that also. he's gonna need something to do b/c DH will be retiring from the NYPD when he is around 42 and our kids will only be in middle school...he ain't sittin home eatin bon bons Chat Icon Chat Icon

I was very lucky my parents paid for my undergraduate and law school degree. My DH on the other hand had to work over 40 hours a week to pay for college (and was lucky to get some scholarships) and is now paying back his law school loans alone - his parents never gave him a dime for any of his schooling or for living expenses during that time.

We both feel very strongly that we do not want to burden our children with the debt that school leaves them starting out with. We plan on paying for their schooling - but we hope that they will get scholarships to help us out in that respect.

Re: spinoff to 529 - who is paying for college?

Also - I had max. student loands for 4 years of college. They were a joke when it came time to pay them off -- like $200 a month. Compared to what I was making, it was more a bother than a hardship.

Also more cost effective to keep $$ in investments and pay off a student loan - your interest rate on investments is most likely much higher than the student loan interest rate.

Most important - be able to take care of yourselves in old age. Your kids have a lifetime to pay back a student loan, but having to cover any expenses for you or DH will be a much bigger hardship no matter what stage they are at in their lives. So if you can only save for one, save for retirement.

However, I think having a student loan makes the child more responsible and vested in his/her education. So she will have to take out student loans.
.

this is how i feel, and what my parents did for me. they made my sister and i get loans out for one year of our undergrad school, and they paid for the other 3. its not that they couldn't pay for all 4, but its that they wanted us to be invested in our education, because when you have money invested in something and know you're paying for it, you take it more seriously. it didn't burden me much at all- i have about 10 K in loans, which i pay back at $130 a month.. its nothing.

ITA. I'd like to do what my parent's did for me; they paid for my Undergraduate college and I paid for my Master's & PD. I never had to take out any loans.

Re: spinoff to 529 - who is paying for college?

Not a parent yet, but this is something DH and I have talked about a lot. We will definately set up a 529 account as soon as the baby is born and we will contribute as well as my parents. We both agree that we will cover state tuition costs (plus anything additonal in the account), but if they want to go to a $$ private school they will be either working their butts off to get a scholarship or coming out with student loans. I graduated from a state school with only $5k in loans (with some help from my parents and a full ride one year) and I would hate to see my children with huge loans when they get out.

Re: spinoff to 529 - who is paying for college?

I'm a professor so DD gets free tuition if she attends my school. If she doesnt want to go there, my college has a scholarship program where they will pay her tuition at another school. Hopefully she'll get that.
