Spinoff to 5ofclubs post..Why would you not get DC the Rotavirus liquid/vaccine?

Not trying to start drama, but this is a serious question.

Ava got Rota Virus at 12 months and 18 months. The vaccine/liquid was not available then. She was not in day care and was home in my care until she was 2 1/2.

She was so sick she was hospitalized almost a week both times. I swear to you she was near death. She laid in that hospital bed not moving at all for days at a time. All of her veins were collapsing, and it got to the point several times, where there was no place left to put in an IV and the next place that they were going to try was her head.

I cannot think of anything worse. Going through that illness with her 2 times, really changed me.

She has no underlying medical conditions, my home is immaculate and she was not exposed to anything out of the ordinary. The Doctors have no idea how/why she got this twice.

Thousands of babies die every year from this. Granted many are from other countries, but babies and small children can go from normal to severely dehydrated in a short period of time.

If this vaccine was available when she was an infant, I would have gotten it. I have worked in the drug industry for many years, and have done my research on many vaccines and medications and I really didn't see a negative to getting this one. I asked about the availablility of this vaccine when I was pg with Brody, and was more than happy to have him get it.

Again, not looking to start anything, I'm just wondering if you did not or will not get the vaccine, what did you base the decision on?

I asked this earlier, i'll bump my post! I was curious as well b/c my practice thought it was very important for my son to have it...

Re: Spinoff to 5ofclubs post..Why would you not get DC the Rotovirus liquid/vaccine?

Ryan got the vaccine. This was one I would not fight because I had a friend who's daughter had gotten Rotovirus. And, like your DD, was near death from it. It just scared me so much I never thought other wise.

My sister is a SAHM and has 3 boys. She has refused it all times and I have no idea why. She claims her DC will not be "around it" and therefore won't contract it.

But I said "you have 2 kids in school, how do you know they won't come in contact with it".

this is actually an really interesting post...

I caught Jenny Mc Carthy on Larry King one night and she kept mentioning that most 1st world countries don't even give the rotovirus vaccine. she made it sound unnecessary.

I was upset that I had already given it to my DC.

I'm so sorry to hear about your DD being sick, but it makes me feel a bit validated that I gave my DC a vaccine that wasn't completely unnecessary.

DD#1 had Rotovirus, she was hospitalized and SO............. sick, so when the vaccine became available for DD#2 I jumped at it! I would never want her to got through the same thing.

Re: Spinoff to 5ofclubs post..Why would you not get DC the Rotovirus liquid/vaccine?

Most countries dont give it and I think people are afraid of it b/c it is SOOO new and the vaccine before it for this was recalled or found to have side effects after like 15 yrs of use ( ok, I may be totally off on my numbers etc, but it was something like that) ...

I gave it b/c I had heard of two stories of newborns almost dying from rotovirus and that outweighed the vaccine risk for me. BUT....we also took my son out very early and around a lot of people and that made a difference too.

Re: Spinoff to 5ofclubs post..Why would you not get DC the Rotovirus liquid/vaccine?

My friends DD was hospitalized for a week when she was 2 with the rotovirus. Like PP have said, the poor kid was near death, 105 fever, non stop vomiting and diarrhea, the works. My friend and her DH were so drained at the end of that week, it was awful. Because of that, DS received the vaccine. HOWEVER, had I not seen that firsthand, I probably never would have thought to get the vaccine for my son. Because of what happened to friends DD, Joey got the vaccine...but to each his own. With vaccines like rotovirus and varicella...I believe that's a very personal desicion. Some parents feel the sickness is less risky then the vaccine, and there is nothing wrong with that. Different strokes for different folks. Chat Icon

I am so torn and confused right now. Chat Icon

DS is supposed to get this tomorrow along with DTaP and PCV. My agreement with the doctor was no more than 2 shots per visit. Now throw Rota into the mix..I'm so scared of giving DS too much at one time..so I was going to refuse it. But now reading all these stories, I'm scared to not get it. Chat Icon

Just so you know...Rota can't be given after 14 weeks so keep this in mind when making your decision tomorrow. I know it's hard.

Re: Spinoff to 5ofclubs post..Why would you not get DC the Rotavirus liquid/vaccine?

I didn't get it because my ped doesn't give it. He provided me with his reasoning and I felt it to be very responsible. If you google it I'm sure you will see why many peds do not give it. He has been in practice for well over 30 years and is generally pro-vaccine so that was enough for me! In addition, DS rarely gets sick, was BF and was/is not in daycare.

We didn't give it either - but I would have had it been offered. My ped is very pro vaccine and doesn't offer it for the same reasons as mentioned by the above poster.

thank you for posting this. I think sometimes people are so scared of the what ifs, they could potentially harm there child. We are sticking with the PED recommended vaccination sked and my DS had the rotovirus.

I'm glad your DD is ok. Its def. scary.

Re: Spinoff to 5ofclubs post..Why would you not get DC the Rotavirus liquid/vaccine?

DS is in daycare so it was a must. I don't think my Ped even gave me the option of saying no. I used to go to a pediatric endocrinologist for my diabetes and I was talking to her and she said she don't give it to DS b/c it was recalled once and it is unnecessary, however, when I spoke to my son's ped, she was discussing the seriousness of this illness, so I gave it to him.

Re: Spinoff to 5ofclubs post..Why would you not get DC the Rotavirus liquid/vaccine?

Soo sorry that you had to go through that, it must have been soo scary, I couldn't even imagine!

DD def. got the rotovirus vaccine, The way I look at everything is that if I can do something to prevent my child from contracting a disease than I am doing it... I couldn't imagine the guilt I would feel if I did not vaccinate DD and then she wound up with the illness :(

If you know her background and what she has been researching etc, you would know that she is extremely knowledgable and does not what she is talking about.

I uderstand that she may be knowledgable, but.. in reality...unfortunately, we place too much value on the opinions of actors in this country.

she is a mom just like the rest of us who happens to do a lot of researchh(on google, she has said). I personally feel that she should leave the speeches about vaccines up to the real professionals... jmo

Jenny McCarthy seems to think she’s some sort of medical superhero and wants to be a spokesperson about autism, then why hasn't she considered the research about it, especially the genetic research....

And I think we place too much value on the opinions of Dr's too. They went to medical school and then went into practice (most) does that mean they know everything there is to know about everything? No way. I question the advice they give and do my own research. And I just don't look at the drug companies website and research either which most times is biased.
