Spinoff to a thread on NFR...Would you ever use a harness on your child?
I totally would. here is the thread on NFR: http://www.lifamilies.com/chat/topic-67210-1.html
Here is my opinion that I wrote on the thread:
I used to be against them but after seeing how a child (a 5 year old) was abducted in front of her mother at a walmart (her mother turned around for a second to grab something off a shelf) in Maine last month, I am all for them. IMHO, I could not give a flying flick about "how horrible" others think it is to "leash" your child. Think about that mother who child is abducted, if she had her "leashed" the predator would not have even tried to take her. We are living in a different world then when we all grew up and although it is sad that children have to be put in a harness to keep them safe, I would rather be safe than sorry.

I would.. I already have one for trips to the zoo, etc. Jack is super fast and getting to the age where he will not sit in the stroller

Re: Spinoff to a thread on NFR...Would you ever use a harness on your child?
I would never use this on my daughter - nor would my husband - we are totally against it. I will do everything in my power to keep a close eye on my daughter whenever we are out in the store or walking in the neighborhood and teach her to be independent and know that when "mommy or daddy"or any relative etc. calls for her because she is drifting off in another direction that she must come back to us and stay near. I know that children tend to drift off when there are crowds of people or think they are being playful and run - but i don't think a harness is going to solve that problem nor stop any abductor from taking a child - for god's sake - robbers steal the purses off our shoulder - who is to say they would not abduct a child because a harness is on them? I think alittle verbal discipline is fine when they are running away from you or "We are going home/ inside" if they don't listen. Eventually they should be able to learn to stay near. My cousin used it on her son and i think it really caused a dependency issue for him. They would use it often even when he was playing in the yard - and if he went a bit off in the wrong direction - they would pull and he would fly back. They started using it when he started to walk and he would tumble from side to side because he didn't have the freedom or balance yet - to stand on his own - and this harness prevented him from keeping his balance - because is was on him frequently. JMO.

Re: Spinoff to a thread on NFR...Would you ever use a harness on your child?
I might use one, but I'm not thrilled with the idea. But with Andrew being an extremely active toddler, I can see the benefit somewhat. It allows a toddler to have the independence to walk around and not be strapped into a stroller or be carried, and it gives the parent peace of mind that the child can't wander off.
I think it is idealistic to think you can always be watching and close enough to prevent a child from wandering into danger or out of sight.

I mentioned on that post that I tried using one when we vacationed in Newport and realized very quickly that it's not for me, so I voted "never".

I think I would use one. I think it is the same as being strapped down to your stroller, atleast now the kid is out and about moving around. I don't think it would be a daily thing, just maybe at the mall.

Agreed! While it kind of gets to me when I see them on kids, I don't know what situation we'll be in when Emily is finally walking all over the place, and there may be a time and place where it is necessary.

Am I the only one that has never seen or heard of this? While I wouldn't judge anybody for using one, its not for me.

I'm not sure. When I first saw it I was horrified (a long time ago) but really it's a great way to keep you child near you in overly crowded places (if not in a stoller). Even the most vigilant person can lose focus for a second and that's all it takes......

I've also learned not to judge other parents. Parents have to do what's best for them, as a family. Who knows the circumstances....and what is it my business anyhow?
I considered one when I first had Gianni because Gabriella was only 18 months and although she listened fairly well, there were still times she would test me.
Times have changed. Back when my mom had all 7 of us, people didn't worry so much about child molesters and abductors. Times are different and you just cannot trust people now-a-days, sadly. It's a proven fact it only takes a second.

Re: Spinoff to a thread on NFR...Would you ever use a harness on your child?
I would use the one that attaches to the childs wrist if anything. My sister had a habit of wandering away when she was little and my mom wasnt taking any chances.. and neither would I!

Hey I was going to say that! Those harnesses always look like lederhosen to me. It wouldn't surprise me if a celebrity was pictured with their kids in Gucci Harnesses soon!

Re: Spinoff to a thread on NFR...Would you ever use a harness on your child?
I would and have used one. My youngest daughter liked to wander off and I bought the one that Fisher-Price made that went around my wrist and then attached to her wrist. I would use whatever it would take to keep my child safely beside me and not give a darn what other people would think. I'd rather have a safe child than go through the heartache of a having a child that was lost.

I have use one also.. Jillian likes to hide under racks in stores and I really like to kno she can not go anywhere.. I used one that went through her arms becasue she figured out how to use the one on her wrist and kept taking the velcro off

Yes I would. I told Scott that if we go to Disney next spring I want the wrist one. I can't take a chance of putting Molly down for a minute and having her see something and start to walk away. I would rather be safe than sorry.
