Spinoff to all the gas posts - have you noticed less people on the roads?

I have noticed this for the last few weekends - hardly anyone on the roads. and also, places I have gone to were pretty empty.

I went to Target last Saturday in mid afternoon and it was deserted. yesterday I was on Sunrise Hwy at 3pm and I could have counted the # of cars on the road w/me.

The HOV lane is fuller during the week for sure. I think more people are car pooling.

We went into Brooklyn last night. Timed it perfect..Belmont Race JUST ended. I think we sat in traffic with every single person that attended the race. What should have been a 1 hour drive turned into 2.
Even coming home close to midnight, there were plenty of people on the LIE.
During the week, our local roads still have plenty of traffic as well.

Yes! I went to NJ (outlets) yesterday

at 12pm no one was on the Turnpike

very odd!

same at 3pm

even odder!

I have been doing this trip for over a year now- and I normally hit traffice

since gas hit close to $4 - less traffic!

well this is a good thing - less consumption is what we need to bring the prices down

We went to CT a couple of weeks ago for Memorial Day weekend, the only traffic we hit coming home was just a little around the outlets in CT. Took us only 2.5 hours to get home ON Memorial Day no less! I definately think it has to do with the price of gas.

Re: Spinoff to all the gas posts - have you noticed less people on the roads?

nope i live in NJ you need a car no matter where you are (centeral/south) theres no good public trans here.... same amt of people or more over here... but we are also 50 cents lower a gallon then ny at any given time due to the tax thing...
even to get to a train or bus to nyc you need to drive a good 20 min and hope you can find parking etc... it really stinks but its reality

i have to drive 30 min + to work, my husband 1 hour.. we both work in odd places throughout the state... so no matter what price gas is we'll pay it... we have no choice.. im sure a ton of people feel the same way..

and i live near the shore and theres still the same amt of people jamming up the parkway on fri ngiht /sat morn to parking lot status to go waste money on shore houses and booze (im talking the "kids" 20s (and some 30s stuck in their 20s) with nothing else to do but drive south hours sit in traffic all just to hang out and waste money).. im not talking families taking a week to enjoy the beach im talking the kids who "need to go down the shore".. that culture doesnt exist for LI and hamptons.. its so weird to me (being from li for 20 years and here for a few )..

sorry i always go off topic, haha

We were in the HOV on Friday on the way to work and I think the other lanes were moving faster, less people than the HOV.

Not really.

I've had similar thoughts while at the mall- I see people loaded down with bags- it does not look like people are spending less- though maybe people are only dropping half as much as usual in the stores...

No-- I have sat in traffic every where I have driven lately. Forget lately-- ALWAYS.

Not during rush hour. My commute has doubled in the past couple of monthsChat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon I am hoping when school is out at the end of the month that it will help a little.

Maybe on the weekends, but I don't really pay attention to the traffic on the weekends.

I actually noticed this today on Middle Country Road. Usually it is jam packed where I live and I just breezed through.

We have extremely limited public transportation where I live and I have not noticed less cars on the road. But I have noticed that people are driving slower and the line at Costco to get gas is very long.
