Those people who wear those signs on the sides of roads...

You know - those people who wear those signs on them that say "Going out of business sale" or whatever big sales that are occurring at a nearby store...

Does anyone else think it is awful? What is the point? Can't the store get a tripod, some duct tape on a pole, anything??? Why do they need to hire someone to stand out in the cold to wear a sign? I think its so degrading... I was on Hempstead tunpike at a red light and saw this middle aged man wearing a sign... his eyes were closed - he looked miserable and freezing, and I was just thinking how pointless it was...

ITA. I feel so bad.

Especially on a day like today or a really hot summer day.

It makes me NOT want to shop at that store.

ETA: I hope it pays well at least.

Re: Those people who wera those signs on the sides of roads...

i think that the people who choose to do this are REALLY hard up looking for work and will do just about anything.

plus, these stores know that the signs will be noticed more by people wearing them than if they were just sitting on the sidewalk.

i really feel bad for the people who don't have any other options than to do this for a "living." Chat Icon

My sister always says the same thing!! She can't understand why they have to make someone stand out in the cold just to hold a damn sign!

It's so true too - why can't they hang it on a telelphone pole or something?? Chat Icon

Re: Those people who wera those signs on the sides of roads...

So funny - DH and I were saying that yesterday. We saw a couple of them and honestly, at first we thought they were homeless people b/c they were so bundled up. At least ones who do that dressed up (like a bear or Subway sandwich in one case) get peoples attention. I don't get it.

I agree with you if it's just a sign on a turnpike.

I was in the city this past weekend & there is no doubt that the sign wearers get more attention, shouting, etc. I know the woman being chased by the Subway Sandwich guy paid attention.

Yeah, I guess.... But I guess its one of those jobs I feel bad that it even exists - obviously, that job is only available for people who are desperate. You ask any kindergartener what they want to be when they grow up. You'll never hear them say, "be a guy who wears a sign..." Chat Icon

I feel bad for them.

I also feel bad for the poor kid who works at the Subway and has to dress in the sandwhich costume and wave to the traffic driving by on 25A in Wading River... Chat Icon

Poor kid, bad enough they're probably only making minimum wage, now they have to dress up like a sandwhich... I honk everytime I pass him/her. Chat Icon Chat Icon

I agree.

I don't really care for this practice, but it doesn't make me not want to shop at the store. At least they're employing someone who might not otherwise have a job.

They should give up on the signs. The guy in the chicken suit is much better marketing.
I think it is sad that people sign up for work like that. I would think anyone could do better than that. I guess it pays the bills.

Re: Those people who wear those signs on the sides of roads...

i always wonder about this, too!! why don't they just hang the signs up? or stick them on a pole in the ground?? is it a law or something that they can't hang the signs?? or is it too much work for the store to get the permits they need to hang signs?? i've never figured it out-- and i do feel bad for the people on cold days like this! its a pretty tough situation that they have to resort to jobs like that Chat Icon

I don't see anything wrong with them other than I feel bad for them (weather conditions, etc.). If it pays the bills, who are we to judge? It seems easy enough.

Cheap advertising/marketing. Look how well the practice works; we're having a discussion about it on LIFChat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Seriously though, for those who might be mentally challenged, etc., it seems like a fair enough job. It's definitely along the lines of "cart boy" status thoughChat Icon

Re: Those people who wear those signs on the sides of roads...

These people get paid for it (I know its not much money, but its still money). Plus, they are noticed more than a sign on a pole. I say, why take away a job from somebody who could use the work.

Know what breaks my heart? I worry all the time that one day I will see one of my wonderful, beautiful, amazing students holding a sign like that because they will never be given a chance to do anthing else in their lives.... Chat Icon
