Spinoff to allowance

Whether or not you have an allowance - how much would you say you spend a month between clothes, makeup, shoes, hair etc.

just curious as to what number I should approach DH with as a "reasonable" amount I should spend a month.Chat Icon

Re: Spinoff to allowance

Clothes and Shoes--$150-200---I'm guessing because sometimes it's $600 and sometimes it's $20. I really cut down on my shopping since I got married.

Make-up---free

Hair is every 3 months...so $40/month

Re: Spinoff to allowance

This is a spinoff to another post about an allowance. I do not have an allowance but I feel I should set a budget for myself monthly as i tend to overspend. Maybe fiscally I do act a little like an 18 year old...

Same. It is also harder to figure it out for myself since I do all the shopping for myself, DS, and DH.

Re: Spinoff to allowance

lately, hardly anything. I bought way too much clothes in college. i think im going to go shopping for some "staples" for fall, but no more than $300.

we are saving for a house, so if i buy alot of clothes, FH will kill me.

Re: Spinoff to allowance

no less then $400 - no more then $2000

it depends on the month- I don't really pay attention- I just try not to buy things and sometimes it back fires

I have cut back on my personal maintence- I took off my forever french nails and starting polishing them myself- so that saves $80 at least

Re: Spinoff to allowance

It varies, but usually around $800. I get paid 2x a month and $400 a paycheck goes into my personal account for my "spending" money. Sometimes I go over, but I try really hard not to.

Clothes this last month alone about $300 BUT they are all maternity clothes.

I barely bought any clothes at all the past two years between saving for the wedding and then trying for a year to get pg.

Makeup total for the year... about $100.
Hair, I'm 80% grey so I really need this $700 year
Clothes... less than $600 last year and that included a winter coat.
Shoes... maybe $100 a year.

I spend less in one year than some women in one monthChat Icon

My credit card bill for that type of thing is always $400-600 a month.

I'm not on an allowance though. It's my own money. Chat Icon

Depends on the month though. One month I found great suits on sale and spent $500 on suits, but that means I am set with new suits for the year. Same thing with jeans--I will buy 3 pairs if they fit well.

Re: Spinoff to allowance

I usually don't spend a lot of $$$ on this stuff. When I do, I just tell my DH a few weeks in advance. For example, my roots are ridiculous and I cannot walk around like this anymore so I gave him a heads up that I have to go get my hair colored and cut and buy a new dress and shoes for his friend's wedding. he's pretty cool with stuff like this. He knows I don't abuse it and that I bargain shop. I wish i could drop hundreds a month on beauty stuff, but we can't afford to. The only thing I do on a regular basis (every 2 weeks) is pedicures. I MUST have clean polish on my toes !

ETA: I'm not on an allowance. We just share all of our money, so I only think it's courtesy to give him a heads up. He does the same thing.

Re: Spinoff to allowance

I don't get an allowance...DH never questions what I take out of the ATM (and I don't take alot either).

I very rarely spend alot of $$ on myself, I feel guilty when there's so much $$ we've been putting into the house the past 6 months.

DH is the spender and I Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon when I see the amex bill every month.

BUT I will be going shopping for a new fall wardrobe this year.

Re: Spinoff to allowance

It flucuates a lot depending on the season, vacations, outlet trips. Anywhere from $50-150 a month.

I think I do, but I do much of my shopping at bargain stores - outlets, Loehmanns, Marshalls, etc., so that is how I justify it to myself.

Re: Spinoff to allowance

Looking at my amex summaries I can say it varies. Some months nothing is spent and some months I could spend $1000!. I would have to look at a year comparison and divide to get a monthly number. I'll consult Quicken and get back to ya.
